언론인 출신 권오문(세계일보 전 문화부장-전 논설위원-스포츠월드 전 편집국장) 작가가 "왜 종교에 목매는가?"라는 제목의 저서를 출간(울림과 세움 출판사)했다.
권오문 작가는 이 책을 통해 “종교는 왜 사랑을 외치면서 분열과 전쟁을 일삼는가?”라고 따지고 “경전 정신으로 다시 인류 미래를 열어야 할 종교!”라고 지적했다.
저자는 이 책에서 “나는 왜 종교인이 됐는가? 인류의 절대다수가 종교에 목매는 이유는 무엇 때문인가? 신이 인간과 우주를 창조하고 주관한다면 왜 이 세상은 갈등과 전쟁이 끊이질 않는가? 과연 갈가리 찢어지고, 갈등과 분쟁을 일삼는 종교, 나는 제대로 믿고 있는가?”라고 질문하고 있다.

저자는 이 책에서 “어쩌다 신을 향한 순수한 믿음이 이기적인 욕망을 채우는 기복 신앙, 집단이기주의로 변질됐는가?”, “사랑을 내세우는 종교가 어떻게 수많은 테러와 전쟁의 배경이 됐는가?”라는 송곳 같은 질문을 멈추지 않음으로써 참된 종교, 진실한 종교인의 길을 다시 발견해야 한다고 설명한다. 종교의 본질을 향한 이러한 질문은 신앙에 대한 공격이나 냉소적인 불신에서 비롯된 것이 아니라 오히려 종교에 대한 깊은 애정과 시대적 책임감에서 출발하는, 가장 진지하고 성숙한 신앙의 한 모습이기 때문“이라면서 ”전대미문의 전환시대를 맞아 가치관의 표류로 모두가 방향을 잃고 헤매는 상황에서 종교의 역할이 그 어느 때보다 절실하다. 그 해답의 실마리는 모든 종교의 시작점, 즉 위대한 성인들의 가르침을 회복하는 것이다. 그리고 단순히 개인의 소원성취를 비는 것에 그치지 않고 성인들이 꿈꿨던 정의롭고 자비로운 세상을 실현하는 데 종교인들이 힘을 모을 수 있다면 이보다 더 큰 종교의 역할은 없을 것이라고 저자는 보고 있다“고 진단했다.

The goal of religion is to practice the saints' teachings of emptying oneself and serving others first, thereby creating a world where everyone is happy. Participating in solving common human problems like poverty and inequality, war and violence, and ecological destruction is the most sacred path to fulfilling God's will. Ultimately, the path of true faith and true religion is no longer confined to doctrine or ritual. It is a vibrant, living path that begins here and now, within each of us, through our concrete life practices, and ultimately culminates in devotion to all of humanity and the world. (p. 328)
