CBS노컷뉴스는 지난 12월29일자에 “임종성 돈 받았나…통일교 단체 매년 고문료 3천만원” 제목의 기사를 보도했다.

CBS노컷뉴스는 이 기사에서 “임종성 전 더불어민주당 의원이 고문을 맡았던 통일교 계열 단체 세계평화도로재단(이하 도로재단)이 수년간 억대 고문료를 써왔던 것으로 확인됐다. 도로재단의 고문을 맡았던 것으로 전해지는 임 전 의원은 "고문료를 받은 적 없다"는 입장이다”면서 “12월29일 CBS노컷뉴스가 확인한 국세청 신고 자료에 따르면, 도로재단은 지난 2017년부터 2024년까지 7년간 고문료 명목으로 2억 5천만 원 가까이 지출했다. 단체는 고문료에 2017년부터 2022년까지 매해 3600만 원가량 지출하다, 2023년엔 2200만 원, 2024년엔 800만 원으로 줄여 7년간 총 2억 4640만 원을 집행했다. 임종성 전 의원이 고문으로 위촉된 시점은 현역 의원 시절이었던 2017년 12월. 그 전후로 임 전 의원은 여러 차례 해당 단체와 한일 해저터널 관련 행사를 공동 주최하거나 단체의 행사에 참석해 축사했다”고 보도했다.
