이별을 노래하는 목소리는 많다. 그러나 야스민 레비의 ‘아디오 께리다(Adio Kerida)’만큼 이별의 뿌리를 깊이까지 파고드는 노래는 드물다. 이 노래에서 작별은 감정의 끝을 넘어 존재의 한쪽이 뜯겨 나가는 고통이며 “안녕, 사랑하는 이여 안녕(Adio Kerida)”이라는 첫 마디는 더는 붙잡을 수 없는 사랑을 떠나보내며 새겨 넣는 절창의 호흡이다.
야스민 레비의 목소리에는 개인의 감정을 넘어선 역사적 서사가 실려 있다. 그녀의 부친 이츠하크 레비(1919~1977)는 세파르디 유대인의 음악과 라디노(Ladino) 문화를 평생 기록해 온 음악학자와 작곡가였다. 오스만 제국의 추방과 대서양의 이주, 공동체의 흩어짐과 침묵이 그의 악보 속에 고스란히 담겨 있었으며 야스민은 그 마지막 기록을 품은 채 자랐다. 그녀는 어린 시절부터 아버지의 필사 노트와 음반을 들으며 사라져 가던 언어의 마지막 숨을 자신의 호흡 속에 저장했다. 그래서 그녀가 라디노로 노래한다는 것은 역사의 상흔을 목소리로 되살리는 일이다.
