‘누가 저 피리를 부는가’라는 노래는 방글라데시의 고전적 대중음악이다. 이 노래는 1980년 개봉된 방갈라데시 영화 구디(Ghuddi-ঘুড)의 주제가였다. 영화는 전쟁의 트라우마에서 벗어나기 위해 치열한 삶을 살아가는 주인공인 자유 투사 아사드가 벵골어로 연 또는 종이연을 뜻하는 여성 구디(Ghuddi-ঘুড)를 만나 사랑을 통한 깊은 일깨움을 그려낸 영화였다.
유명 작사가 에스엠 헤다얏(S.M. Hedayet)의 가사에 영화의 음악을 맡았던 방글라데시 천재 음악가 러키 아칸드(Lucky Akhand, 1956~2017)가 작곡하였다. 그의 형인 해피 아칸드(Happy Akhand, 1954~1987)가 부른 이 노래는 시대의 숨결과 같은 노래다.
영국 군 장교이며 음악가였던 아버지의 영향에서 태어난 천재 음악가 형제 해피 아칸드와 러키 아칸드는 방글라데시 대중 음악사에 소금과 빛을 남긴 전설이었다. 10살 때부터 기타를 배우기 시작한 해피 아칸드는 다양한 악기에 뛰어난 재능을 드러내면서 1972년 키보드 연주자로 밴드에서 활동을 시작하였으며 1979년 방글라데시 록 밴드 마일스 창립 멤버로 활동하였다.
그가 부른 ‘누가 저 피리를 부는가’는 방글라데시 청춘 세대가 1980년대에 품었던 그리움과 슬픔의 정서가 층층이 쌓여 사랑을 받았던 노래로 오늘날 많은 가수에 의하여 되살아나고 있다.
동생 러키 아칸드는 음악의 천재였다. 다섯 살에 음악 교습을 시작한 그는 13살에 파키스탄 예술위원회의 ‘현대 방글라 노래’ 대회 1등 상을 거머쥐었으며 14살에 HMV 파키스탄 공식 작곡가로, 16살에 HMV 인도 작곡가로 기록되었을 만큼 방글라데시에 전설의 천재성을 알렸다. 1987년 해피 아칸드가 간경화 후유증으로 33세의 나이로 요절하면서 방글라데시 음악계는 깊은 슬픔에 빠졌으며 특히 그 충격으로 동생 러키 아칸드는 모든 활동을 중단하였다가 10년 후인 1997년 다시 음악 활동을 시작하였다.
필자는 가수 해피 아칸드가 1980년 영화 '구디'에서 발표한 ‘누가 저 피리를 부는가’와 함께 발표한 불후의 명곡 ‘다시 저녁이 찾아왔다(Abar Elo Je Shondha)’를 소개하기 위하여 너무나 많은 이야기를 나누어 정리하기 위하여 젊은 여성 가수 '파르자나 파리야 자힌'이 커버한 곡을 가슴으로 듣는 Playlist (8)번 곡으로 선정하였다.
해피 아칸다가 남긴 원곡은 포크와 시티팝 사이를 잇는 독특한 감성의 길을 열었던 감성이 가득하다. 이 노래를 새롭게 불러온 가수들은 수십 명에 이른다. 그중 파르자나 파리야 자힌의 노래는 많은 커버 곡 중에서 가장 현대적이며 젊은 벵골 여성의 감성으로 새롭게 호흡한 특별한 해석이 뛰어나다. 원곡의 정서를 해치지 않으면서도 현대적 악기와 어우러지는 깊은 호흡이 인상적이다. 특히 방글라데시 전통에서 피리(바시)는 ‘부름’의 상징이라는 역사적인 감성을 깊숙하게 담고 있다.
