국가암검진은 암을 조기에 발견해 치료율을 높이고 의료비 부담을 완화하기 위해 국가가 지원하는 예방 중심의 보건의료 정책이다.
국가암검진 대상자는 출생 연도 끝자리가 짝수(0·2·4·6·8)인 국민으로, 연령과 성별에 따라 위암, 간암, 대장암, 유방암, 자궁경부암 등 주요 암에 대한 검진을 받을 수 있다. 검진 비용은 무료 또는 최소한의 본인부담금으로 진행된다.
검진 항목별로 보면, 자궁경부암은 만 20세 이상 여성을 대상으로 2년마다 실시되며, 위암과 유방암은 만 40세 이상을 대상으로 2년마다 검진이 이뤄진다.
