<브레이크뉴스 강릉= 김일웅기자>강릉시에서 개최되는 ‘2026 강릉세계마스터즈탁구선수권대회’가 문화체육관광부 주관 ‘2026년 지자체 개최 국제경기대회 지원사업’ 공모에 선정돼 전국 최대 규모인 국비 7억 8천만 원을 확보했다.
이번 공모는 국제경기대회 유치 계획과 개최 역량, 지역경제 파급효과 등을 종합적으로 심사해 진행됐으며, ‘2026 강릉세계마스터즈탁구선수권대회’를 포함해 전국 13개 시도에서 열리는 23개 대회가 최종 선정됐다.
2026 강릉세계마스터즈탁구선수권대회는 전 세계 100여 개국의 동호인과 은퇴 선수 등 약 4천 명이 참가하는 대규모 국제대회로, 지역경제 활성화 측면에서 높은 평가를 받은 것으로 알려졌다.
강릉시 관계자는 “2018 평창동계올림픽과 2024 강원 청소년동계올림픽을 성공적으로 개최한 경험을 바탕으로, 2026년 6월 열리는 세계마스터즈탁구선수권대회와 9월에 이어 개최될 월드테이블테니스 유스 컨텐더(WTT Youth Contender), 월드테이블테니스 유스 스타 컨텐더(WTT Youth Star Contender) 국제대회도 차질 없이 준비하겠다”며 “강릉시를 명실상부한 국제 스포츠 개최 도시로 세계에 각인시키겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편 ‘2026 강릉세계마스터즈탁구선수권대회’는 2026년 6월 5일(금)부터 6월 12일(금)까지 강릉스피드스케이팅경기장과 강릉아레나 등 강릉올림픽파크 일원에서 개최될 예정이다.
