박 도의원은 이날 현충탑과 고(故) 박태준 포스코 명예회장 동상을 참배한 뒤 포항시청 브리핑룸에서 기자회견을 열고, 오는 6월 3일 전국동시지방선거 포항시장 선거에 출마하겠다고 밝혔다.
박 도의원은 출마 선언문에서 “이번 선거는 단지 시장 한 사람을 뽑는 선거가 아니라, 포항이 앞으로 ‘버티는 도시’로 남을 것인지 ‘다시 뛰는 도시’로 나아갈 것인지를 결정하는 선거”라고 강조했다.
이어 “지금 지켜야 할 것은 시민의 삶과 경제”라며 “당장 할 수 있는 일과 반드시 해야 할 일을 통해 시민의 삶을 지켜내고, 철강산업 재건을 바탕으로 신산업을 육성해 포항의 미래를 준비하겠다”고 말했다.
박 도의원은 현재 포항의 상황에 대해 “시민의 마음이 무너질 만큼 어렵다”고 진단했다. 그는 “IMF 때도, 코로나 때도 견뎠지만 요즘처럼 마음이 무너진 적은 없었다는 시민들의 말이 나온다”며 “철강 경기가 흔들리면서 도시 전체가 함께 흔들리고 있다”고 말했다.
또 현장에서 들은 시민의 말을 소개하며 “아침에 눈을 뜨면 공장 굴뚝에 연기가 올라가는지부터 본다는 말에 지금 포항의 현실이 담겨 있다”며 “포항의 위기는 단순한 경기 침체가 아니라 도시의 기운과 자신감이 꺼져가고 있다는 신호”라고 강조했다.
출마 슬로건으로는 ‘내 일이 있는 포항, 내일이 있는 포항’을 제시했다. 박 도의원은 “‘내 일’은 단순히 일자리 숫자를 늘리는 것이 아니라 가정이 버틸 수 있는 임금, 청년이 포항에서 미래를 설계할 수 있는 경력, 노동이 존중받는 현장, 기술이 이어지는 산업 기반을 뜻한다”고 설명했다.
이어 “‘내일’은 오늘의 고통을 외면한 채 미래만 외치는 것이 아니라 시민의 삶을 지키면서 열어가는 내일”이라고 덧붙였다.
박 도의원은 자신이 가진 강점으로 ‘현장형 리더십’과 ‘행정을 아는 실행력’을 내세웠다. 그는 “지금 포항에 필요한 사람은 완벽한 사람이 아니라 위기의 현장을 알고, 문제가 생겼을 때 뒤로 물러서지 않았던 사람”이라며 “위기를 책으로 배운 사람이 아니라 현장과 삶으로 겪어온 사람”이라고 말했다.
또 12년간 경북도의회에서 활동한 경험을 언급하며 “행정은 어디서 막히는지, 무엇이 있어야 움직이는지, 어떻게 해야 결과로 이어지는지를 직접 부딪히며 배웠다”며 “포항의 위기를 말이 아닌 정책으로 설계하고, 행정으로 움직이며, 성과로 책임지겠다”고 밝혔다.
시정 운영 방향과 관련해서는 “위기일수록 기본부터 지켜야 한다”며 ‘할 수 있는 일, 해야 할 일부터 하겠다’는 원칙을 제시했다. 돌봄·보육, 교육, 청년 정주 기반 강화, 소상공인 지원 등 민생 체감 정책을 우선 추진하겠다는 뜻도 밝혔다.
박 도의원은 끝으로 “정치는 시민이 내 삶을 다시 믿게 하는 일”이라며 “포항이 다시 자신을 믿는 도시가 될 수 있도록 현장에 가고, 문제를 붙잡고, 끝까지 해결하며 포항의 ‘내 일’과 ‘내일’을 책임지겠다”고 말했다.
박용선 도의원은 3선의 경북도의원으로 포항제철공업고등학교 졸업 한뒤 경북대학교 사회정책정보대학원을 졸업했다. 제10대에 경북도의회에 들어와 제12대 경상북도의회 부의장을 지냈다.

He added, "As the steel industry falters, the entire city is shaking."
He also shared comments from citizens he'd heard on the ground, saying, "The saying that the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning is to see if smoke rises from factory chimneys captures the current reality of Pohang." He emphasized, "Pohang's crisis isn't simply an economic downturn; it's a sign that the city's energy and confidence are fading."
He proposed the slogan, "Pohang with My Job, Pohang with Tomorrow." Councilman Park explained, "'My Job' doesn't simply mean increasing the number of jobs; it means wages that families can sustain, careers that allow young people to build their futures in Pohang, workplaces where labor is respected, and an industrial base where technology continues to thrive."
He added, "'Tomorrow' doesn't just mean ignoring the pain of today and shouting about the future; it means a tomorrow that protects the lives of citizens."
Councilman Park emphasized his "on-the-ground leadership" and "administrative execution skills" as his strengths. He stated, "Pohang needs someone who understands the realities of crisis and doesn't back down when problems arise, not someone who learned about crises from books. They need someone who has experienced them in person and in real life."
Referring to his 12 years of experience serving in the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council, he stated, "I learned firsthand where administrative obstacles arise, what is necessary for action, and how to achieve results." He added, "I will design Pohang's crisis not with words, but with policies, implement them through administration, and take responsibility for them with results."
Regarding the direction of city administration, he stated, "Even in times of crisis, we must stick to the basics first," and set forth the principle of "doing what we can and must do first." He also expressed his intention to prioritize policies that directly impact the lives of the people, such as childcare, education, strengthening youth settlement infrastructure, and supporting small businesses.
Councilman Park concluded by saying, “Politics is about making citizens believe in their lives again,” and added, “I will go to the field, grasp the problem, and resolve it until the end so that Pohang can become a city that believes in itself again. I will take responsibility for Pohang’s ‘my work’ and ‘tomorrow.’”
