브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 이란에서 경제난으로 촉발된 대규모 반정부 시위 과정에서 최대 1만8000명에 달하는 사망자가 발생했다는 외신 보도가 나왔다.
영국 선데이타임스는 18일(현지 시간) 이란 전역 8개 주요 안과 병원과 16개 응급실 의료진이 집계한 자료를 인용해, 어린이와 임산부를 포함해 최소 1만6500명에서 최대 1만8000명이 숨졌다고 보도했다.
현지 의료진과 외부의 연락은 정부의 통신 차단 이후 일론 머스크의 위성 인터넷 서비스 스타링크를 통해 이뤄진 것으로 전해졌다.
이에 따르면 부상자는 33만~36만 명에 이르며, 최소 700~1000명은 한쪽 눈을 실명한 것으로 집계됐다. 테헤란의 한 안과 병원에서만 안구 손상 사례가 7000건 이상 기록된 것으로 전해졌다. 현지 의료진은 “환자가 너무 많아 누구를 먼저 치료해야 할지 모를 지경”이라고 밝혔다.
사상자의 대부분은 이란 정부가 인터넷과 통신을 전면 차단한 이후인 지난 8~9일 사이에 발생했으며, 희생자의 상당수는 30세 미만으로 파악됐다.
