[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 밀양 지역의 오랜 숙원사업이자 역점 과제인 한국폴리텍대학 밀양캠퍼스 설립사업이 본 괘도에 올랐다.
시는 이 사업의 총사업비 458억원이 기획예산처로부터 최종 승인되며 사업 본격 추진을 위한 행정절차를 마무리했다고 19일 밝혔다.
기획예산처의 총사업비 확정으로 2015년 캠퍼스 설립 결정 이후, 장기간 지속된 사업 추진 불확실성이 해소되면서 시는 2026년 상반기 착공을 목표로 사업 추진에 속도를 낼 계획이다.
시는 그간 행정절차 지연과 사업비 조정 문제로 사업 추진에 난항을 겪었으나, 중앙부처와의 지속적인 방문·협의를 통해 사업의 당위성과 시급성을 적극 설명하는 등 이른바 '발로 뛰는 행정'을 이어왔다.
특히 시는 박상웅 국회의원과 긴밀히 소통·협력하며 총사업비 확보에 총력을 기울여 왔고 이번 총사업비 확정은 시의 전략적인 대응의 결과이다.
한국폴리텍대학 밀양캠퍼스는 내이동 소재 구 밀양대학교 부지에 대학본부, 공학관, 기숙사 등 총 6개 동 규모로 조성될 예정이다.
캠퍼스는 밀양의 전략산업인 나노기술에 특화된 교육 거점으로 구축되며 나노 특화 4개 학과를 중심으로 연간 1800여명의 실무형 기술 인력을 양성할 계획이다.
교육과정은 학위과정 300명 규모로 운영되며 재직자 교육과정과 실업자 재취업과정 등 1500명 규모의 단기 과정도 함께 운영해 지역 산업현장의 수요에 탄력적으로 대응할 방침이다.
또한, 시는 이번 캠퍼스 설립이 나노융합 국가산단 '미래첨단 소재·부품 기회발전특구'와 연계돼 지역 산업 경쟁력 강화에 기여할 것으로 기대한다.
특히 산업현장에 필요한 기술 인력을 적기에 공급함으로써 기업 인력난 완화, 기업 유치, 청년 일자리 확대와 지역 정착으로 이어지는 기반을 마련한다는 구상이다.
아울러 2006년 대학 통합·이전 이후 장기간 유휴지로 남아 있던 구 밀양대학교 부지가 교육시설로 재정비되면 교육생과 교직원 등 유동 인구가 늘어나 구도심 상권 활성화에도 크게 도움이 될 것으로 전망된다.
안병구 시장은 "지역 산업이 필요로 하는 인재를 키우는 핵심 거점이자 지역경제에 활력을 더하는 기반이 되도록 착공 준비와 사업 추진에 최선을 다하겠다"고 말했다.
