지난해 4월 경기경제자유구역 후보지로 선정된 파주시가 중앙정부로부터 경제자유구역 지정을 받기 위한 본격적인 행보에 나섰다.
파주시는 지난 20일 시청에서 김경일 시장을 비롯해 부시장, 관련 실·국·소·본부장 등 주요 간부들이 참석한 가운데 '파주경제자유구역 지정 용역 착수보고회'를 개최했다.

이날 보고회에서는 경제자유구역 지정을 위한 추진 전략 및 계획, 부서별 역할과 일정 등을 논의하고 산업통상부 지정 신청 절차와 실행 체계를 점검했다.
경제자유구역은 외국인 투자기업 및 국내 복귀기업의 경영 환경과 정주 여건을 개선해 외국인 투자와 기업 유치를 촉진하기 위한 특별구역이다.
경제자유구역으로 지정되면 외국인 투자기업과 국내 복귀 기업에 세제 혜택 등 각종 인센티브가 제공돼 입주 여건이 크게 개선된다.
이를 통해 핵심기업을 유치할 경우 양질의 일자리 창출로 지역경제가 활성화되면서 도시 전반에 활력을 가져다줄 것으로 기대된다.
또한 국제학교, 체육시설 등 도시 개발이 활성화되면서 정주여건이 대폭 개선되고, 국제적인 수준의 자족도시로 발돋움할 수 있는 새로운 활로가 열릴 전망이다.
