박 전 시장은 지난 20일 포항시청 브리핑룸에서 기자회견을 열고, 오천 사격장 이전 부지에 270홀 규모의 파크골프장을 조성하는 방안을 발표했다. 그는 “파크골프는 남녀노소 누구나 즐길 수 있는 국민 스포츠로 자리 잡았다”며 “오천에 들어설 270홀 파크골프장은 단순한 여가시설을 넘어 포항 스포츠 복지의 완성이자, 체류형 스포츠 관광을 통해 지역경제를 살리는 핵심 인프라가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
이번에 제안된 파크골프장은 단일 부지 기준으로 전국 최대 규모다. 전국·국제 대회 개최는 물론 전지훈련과 교육 기능을 함께 갖춘 체류형 스포츠 관광 인프라로 조성하는 것이 핵심 구상이다. 박 전 시장은 “기네스북 등재가 가능한 세계적 랜드마크로 조성해 국내는 물론 해외 방문객까지 포항으로 끌어들이겠다”고 강조했다.
교육·산업 연계 구상도 함께 제시됐다. 박 전 시장은 “포항대학교와 선린대학교에서 2026년 파크골프 관련 교육과정 신설을 검토·준비하고 있는 것으로 알고 있다”며 “이를 계기로 지역 대학과 연계한 파크골프 교육·연구 기반이 확대될 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
아울러 파크골프 지도자 양성과 실업팀 육성 등을 통해 포항을 중심으로 한 파크골프 산업화 모델을 단계적으로 구축하고, 이를 스포츠 전문 인재 양성, 일자리 창출, 지역 산업 다각화로 연결하겠다는 구상도 밝혔다.
재원 조달 방식에 대해서는 “시 재정에만 의존하지 않고 민자 유치와 국비 연계를 통해 단계적으로 추진해 재정 부담을 최소화하겠다”고 설명했다.
이와 함께 해병대 기념관, 포은 정몽주관, 키즈랜드를 연계 조성해 안보와 충절의 가치, 미래세대 교육이 하나로 어우러지는 오천의 새로운 상징 공간을 만들겠다는 계획도 제시했다.
박 전 시장은 “270홀 파크골프장은 포항을 대한민국을 넘어 세계가 주목하는 스포츠 도시로 도약시키는 전환점이 될 것”이라고 강조했다.
