합동참모본부는 27일 오후 3시 50분께 북한 평양 북방 일대에서 동해상으로 발사된 단거리탄도미사일(SRBM) 수 발을 우리 군이 포착했다고 밝혔다. 북한이 발사한 미사일은 약 350㎞를 비행한 것으로 파악됐으며, 한미 당국은 정확한 제원에 대해 정밀 분석을 진행 중이다.
한미 정보당국은 발사 직후 미사일 비행 동향을 추적했으며, 미·일 측과 관련 정보를 긴밀히 공유했다. 합참은 “우리 군은 굳건한 한미 연합방위태세 하에 북한의 다양한 동향을 예의주시하고 있으며, 어떠한 도발에도 압도적으로 대응할 수 있는 능력과 태세를 유지하고 있다”고 강조했다.

일각에서는 북한이 다음 달 제9차 노동당 대회를 앞두고 내부 결속을 다지는 동시에 무력 시위를 통해 존재감을 부각하려는 의도에서 미사일 발사를 감행한 것이라는 분석도 나온다.
주한미군은 미사일 발사 직후 입장문을 내고 “이번 사안은 미 인원이나 영토, 동맹국에 대한 즉각적인 위협은 아니다”며 “미국은 미 본토와 역내 동맹국 방어에 대한 공약을 유지하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
