고양특례시가 북한산성을 포함한 '한양의 수도성곽'의 유네스코 세계유산 등재에 본격 나섰다.
고양시는 3일 지난달 27일 국가유산청, 서울시, 경기도와 함께 '한양의 수도성곽(Capital Fortifications of Hanyang)' 세계유산 등재신청서를 유네스코 세계유산센터에 정식 제출했다고 밝혔다.

한양의 수도성곽은 조선의 수도 한양을 방어하기 위해 축조된 대규모 성곽 시스템이다.
행정 중심지인 한양도성, 군사 방어용 북한산성, 그리고 백성의 피난처이자 장기전 대비 창고 보호를 위한 탕춘대성이 하나로 연결된 단일 유산으로, 오랜 기간 형성·유지되며 수도 방어와 통치 체계의 변천사를 고스란히 간직하고 있다.

제출된 신청서는 유네스코 세계유산센터의 완성도 검사를 거쳐 오는 3월부터 국제기념물유적협의회(ICOMOS)의 평가를 받게 된다.
등재심의 대상으로 선정될 경우 2027년 제49차 세계유산위원회에서 최종 등재 여부가 결정될 예정이다.
등재에 성공하면 고양시는 경기도 31개 시·군 중 조선왕릉(서삼릉·서오릉)과 함께 2건의 세계유산을 보유한 유일한 자치단체가 된다.

시 관계자는 "유네스코 세계유산 등재 신청은 북한산성의 역사적 가치와 위상을 국제사회에 알리는 중요한 과정"이라며 "경주시, 부여시, 공주시 등이 세계유산 등재 후 내외국인 방문객이 급증한 사례를 볼 때, 지역 활성화 효과도 클 것으로 기대된다"고 밝혔다.
고양시는 앞으로 국가유산청, 서울시, 경기도와 긴밀히 협력해 국제심사 절차에 적극 대응할 계획이다.

If successful, Goyang City will become the only local government among the 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province to possess two World Heritage sites, along with the Joseon Royal Tombs (Seosamneung and Seooreung).
A city official stated, "The UNESCO World Heritage application is an important process for promoting the historical value and status of Bukhansanseong Fortress to the international community. Given the surge in domestic and international visitors following World Heritage designation in Gyeongju, Buyeo, and Gongju, we anticipate a significant regional revitalization effect."
Goyang City plans to actively cooperate with the National Heritage Administration, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Gyeonggi Province in the international review process.
