의정부시는 대통령 직속 지방시대위원회가 주관한 ‘도시취약지역 생활여건 개조사업 준공지구 평가’에서 신흥마을(신흥로 168번길 일원)이 ‘우수지구’로 선정되어 기관 표창을 수상했다고 밝혔다.
신흥마을은 한국전쟁 직후 피난민들이 모여 형성된 대표적인 노후 자연 부락으로, 지난 2019년 도시재생 새뜰마을사업 대상지로 선정되어 5년간 대대적인 정비 사업이 진행됐다.
시는 이 기간 동안 ▲기초 생활 인프라 확충 ▲노후 주택 집수리 지원 ▲마을 안전 환경 개선 등 물리적 정비뿐만 아니라, 주민 역량 강화를 위한 휴먼케어 사업을 병행해 마을의 사회적·환경적 여건을 획기적으로 개선했다.
특히 이번 평가에서 가장 높은 점수를 받은 부분은 ‘세대 통합형 주민 커뮤니티 공간’ 조성이다. 시는 국유지 내 무허가 건물이었던 노후 경로당을 철거하고, 그 자리에 마을광장, 야외 운동시설, 공동체 거점 공간 등을 갖춘 복합 시설을 건립했다. 이는 단순한 경로당 기능을 넘어 전 세대가 어우러지는 소통의 장을 마련하고, 사업 종료 후에도 지속 가능한 마을 활동의 기반을 닦았다는 평을 받았다.
