북부지방산림청은 귀성객과 성묘객이 몰리는 9일부터 오는 18일까지 10일간을 ‘설 연휴 산불방지 특별대책기간’으로 지정하고, 산불 예방 및 초동 진화에 행정력을 집중한다고 밝혔다.

이에 따라 지방청과 소속 6개 국유림관리소는 연휴 기간에도 ‘산불방지대책본부’를 빈틈없이 가동한다. 특히 ‘산불재난특수진화대’와 ‘산림재난대응단’ 등 180여 명의 정예 진화 인력과 고성능 산불 진화 차량 등 가용 장비를 총동원해 24시간 산불 상황 관리 체계를 유지한다.

또한, 본격적인 연휴가 시작되기 전인 9일부터 13일까지는 각 관리소장 등 부서장이 직접 현장으로 나선다. 이들은 산불 취약 지역을 중심으로 위험 행위를 집중 단속하고, 소각 금지 계도 활동과 시설 안전 점검을 통해 화재 위험 요인을 사전에 차단할 계획이다.
북부청에 따르면 최근 10년간 관내에서 설 연휴 기간 발생한 산불은 총 24건으로, 축구장 8개 면적에 달하는 5.5ha의 산림이 소실됐다. 주요 원인으로는 쓰레기 등 불법 소각이 38%(9건), 입산자 실화가 21%(5건)를 차지해, 명절 기간 부주의에 의한 인재(人災)가 끊이지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
