[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 통영시는 국가유산청 주관사업인 통영 근대역사문화공간 주요 거점에 대한 보수·정비를 완료하고 10일 항남1번가 김상옥 기념관 옆 쉼터에서 ‘통영근대역사문화공간 조성사업 준공식’을 성황리에 개최했다.
이날 준공식에는 시장을 비롯해 국가유산청·경상남도 국과장, 도·시의원, 유품 기증자인 김영길 교수님, 시민 등 100여 명이 참석해 통영 원도심의 새로운 출발을 함께 축하했다.
‘통영근대역사문화공간’은 전국 9개 시·군 가운데 여섯 번째로 등록된 근대역사문화공간이며, 항남동과 중앙동 원도심 일대 약 1만 4천㎡ 대상으로 국가등록문화유산 8개소와 등록문화자원 9개소를 포함해 총 148필지가 포함된 대규모 사업이다.
시는 “통영의 심장부인 원도심이 다시 살아나야 통영시 전체가 활력을 얻는다”라는 목표 아래 2023년부터 본격적으로 사업을 추진해 왔으며, 이번 준공을 통해 원도심 재생의 가시적인 성과를 시민들과 공유하게 됐다.
이번 사업을 통해 김상옥 생가는 기념관으로 복원돼 시인의 삶과 문학 세계를 조명하는 문화공간으로 거듭났으며, 김양곤 가옥은 카페로 조성돼 주민과 여행자가 자연스럽게 어우러지는 소통의 공간으로 활용된다.
또한 동진여인숙은 체험형 스테이 공간으로, 구 대흥여관은 근대 사진 전시관과 체험형 사진관으로 단장돼 근대의 정취를 감각적으로 체험할 수 있도록 재탄생했다.
아울러 국가등록문화유산이 밀집된 김상옥 생가 주변 부지는 매입·철거 후 버스킹 공연과 작은 음악회가 열리는 도심 속 열린 쉼터로 조성돼 시민과 방문객 모두에게 휴식과 문화 향유의 공간을 제공할 예정이다.
이와 함께 근대 사진 부스 4개소 설치, QR코드 스탬프 투어 운영, 일반 건축물 리모델링 지원 등을 통해 주민이 직접 참여하는 ‘특색 있는 근대 테마거리’ 조성의 기반도 마련됐다.
특히 통영시는 그간의 사업 성과를 인정받아 내년도 잔여 국가등록문화유산 보수를 위한 국비 포함 예산 20억 8천만 원을 사전 승인받는 성과도 거두며 지속적인 원도심 재생에 대한 동력을 확보했다.
통영시 관계자는 “이번 통영근대역사문화공간 조성은 단순한 관광자원 확충을 넘어, 공간에 머물며 도시의 이야기를 체험하는 체류형 문화·관광 모델로 확장되는 중요한 전환점”이라며 “과거의 거리가 오늘의 이야기로, 오래된 건물이 새로운 문화로 다시 살아나는 살아 있는 원도심을 만들어 가겠다”고 밝혔다.
