지난 2013년 5월 중국 상하이 동방 위성TV 프로그램 ‘중국의 꿈에 목소리(中国梦之声)’라는 오디션 프로그램이 시작되면서 대륙의 귀를 모은 가수가 있었다. 소수민족 먼바 족(門巴族)의 터전인 티베트 외진 산골 태생의 양지마(央吉瑪)였다.
그녀는 매 경연 무대에서 먼바 족의 전통 민요를 현대적 감성으로 매만져 기도나 의식에 가까운 노래를 선보였다. 당시 심사위원들은 평가해야 할 참가자가 아닌 경험해야 할 예술로 평가하였으며 아득한 전설의 울림을 샘물처럼 퍼 올리는 그녀의 노래에 대중들은 뜨거운 응원을 보냈다. 마침내 인기와 실력을 두루 갖춘 강력한 우승 후보들과 경연한 결승전에서 준우승하였지만, 대중 투표에서 그녀가 우승한 사실은 그녀의 노래가 품은 감동의 무게와 같았다.

오늘 소개하는 음원은 동일한 노래이지만, 가수의 노래마다 티베트어와 전설과 같은 먼바 족의 언어가 섞인 탓으로 번역이 결코, 쉽지 않다. 가수의 현장감이 있는 원초적인 숨결을 담기 위한 선택으로 어느 라이브 현장 음원을 사용하였다. 이에 가수의 특징적인 음성을 고스란히 전하지 못하는 아쉬움이 있다. 가수는 특유의 낮고 두터우면서도 울림이 있는 저음이 뛰어난 가수이다. 이는 노력으로 얻어지는 발성이 아닌 타고난 재능이다. 바로 실험 음악가 문정(文靖)이 그녀에게 전한 말도 이러한 특성을 헤아린 것으로 추정한다.

In May 2013, a singer captured the attention of the Chinese mainland with the launch of the audition program "Voice of China's Dream" on Shanghai Eastern Satellite TV. Yang Ji-ma was born in a remote mountain village in Tibet, home to the Monba ethnic minority.
In each competition, she reworked the traditional Monba folk songs with a modern sensibility, presenting songs that bordered on prayer or ritual. The judges at the time considered her an art form to be experienced, not a contestant to be judged. The audience enthusiastically cheered her on, her songs drawing forth the echoes of distant legends like a spring. Born in 1986 in Medog County, known as the "secret land of blooming flowers," Yang Ji-ma was the daughter of renowned Monba folk singers, both her maternal grandmother and mother. Raised in a world of traditional music, she pursued her dream and enrolled in the China Communication University in Beijing, majoring in musicology. The university she attended was a prestigious national university, renowned as the cradle of talent for China's CCTV, and held a wide range of influence.
During her time in college, she participated in a folk music club and formed a small band, where she became a key member of campus performances, gaining experience in collaboration and onstage performances. At the time, a young student named Yang Zhi Ma was recognized for her raw musicality, as if she were breathing wildly. It was Wen Jing, a Beijing-based experimental musician and producer. Hearing Yang Zhi Ma's distinctive music at a campus performance, Wen Jing delivered a memorable message: "Your music is a work of art, not a stage."
