포스코는 지난해 10월 CBMM과 5만 달러 규모의 ‘GEM 매칭 펀드’ 조성을 위한 협약을 체결했다. GEM 매칭 펀드는 ‘Go Extra Mile’의 약자로, 사회 발전을 위해 한 걸음 더 나아간다는 의미를 담았다. 포스코가 원료 공급사와 일대일 매칭 방식으로 출연하는 글로벌 사회공헌 기금이다.
CBMM은 브라질 소재 철강 원료 공급사로, 자동차 강판과 교량·철골 구조물 등에 사용되는 고장력 강판의 주요 소재인 니오븀을 생산한다.
양사는 2021년 첫 협약 체결 이후 ▲호주 원주민 취업 연계 교육 ▲강원 산불 피해 복원 ▲전남 지역 장학기금 지원 ▲브라질 취약계층 청소년 진학 지원 등 다양한 사회공헌 사업을 이어왔다.
이번에 조성된 기금은 한국산업단지공단과 협력해 포항·광양 국가산업단지 내 안전 인프라 개선에 투입됐다. 포항과 광양이 정부의 ‘산업위기선제대응지역’으로 지정된 상황에서 기업이 지역 위기 극복에 동참한다는 의미를 담았다.
사업은 지난해 10월 협약 체결 이후 12월부터 올해 1월까지 약 두 달간 진행됐다. 산업단지 내 안전 취약 구간을 중심으로 스마트 가로등과 배수안내 커버(빗물받이 경계석)를 설치해 근로자와 주민 안전을 강화했다.
포항에서는 야간 저조도 구간의 스마트 가로등 14본을 교체했다. 자동 조도 제어 기능을 통해 밝기와 전력 소모를 최적화하고, 통합관제센터 실시간 모니터링으로 고장 여부를 즉시 확인할 수 있도록 했다.
광양에서는 상습 침수 구역을 중심으로 배수안내 커버 203개를 설치했다. 배수로 시인성을 높여 침수 사고를 예방하는 효과가 기대된다.
박병훈 한국산업단지공단 경북지역본부장은 “스마트 가로등 설치로 야간 사고 예방과 에너지 비용 절감 효과가 기대된다”고 말했다. 박진만 전남지역본부장도 “배수안내 커버 설치로 하절기 침수 피해 예방은 물론 산업단지 환경이 한층 쾌적해졌다”며 감사를 표했다.
포스코 관계자는 “이번 사업은 산업단지 근로자와 지역 주민의 안전을 위해 글로벌 기업과 협업한 사례”라며 “앞으로도 지역 위기 극복과 상생을 위한 다양한 방안을 추진하겠다”고 밝혔다.

POSCO has improved safety infrastructure in the Pohang and Gwangyang National Industrial Complexes using funds created with CBMM, a key raw material supplier.
In October of last year, POSCO signed an agreement with CBMM to establish a $50,000 "GEM Matching Fund." The GEM Matching Fund, short for "Go Extra Mile," symbolizes POSCO's commitment to going the extra mile for social development. It is a global social contribution fund in which POSCO contributes one-to-one with raw material suppliers.
CBMM, a Brazilian-based steel raw material supplier, produces niobium, a key material for high-strength steel used in automotive steel plates, bridges, and steel structures. Since signing their first agreement in 2021, the two companies have engaged in various social contribution projects, including providing employment training for Australian indigenous people, restoration efforts for wildfires in Gangwon Province, scholarship support for the Jeonnam region, and educational advancement support for vulnerable youth in Brazil.
The funds raised this time were used to improve safety infrastructure in the Pohang and Gwangyang National Industrial Complexes in collaboration with the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation. This project embodies the company's commitment to overcoming the local crisis, as Pohang and Gwangyang have been designated as "Industrial Crisis Preemptive Response Areas" by the government.
The project, which began in October of last year and lasted for approximately two months, from December to January of this year, focused on safety-critical areas within the industrial complexes. Smart streetlights and drainage guide covers (rainwater guide stones) were installed to enhance the safety of workers and residents.
In Pohang, 14 smart streetlights were replaced in low-light areas at night. The automatic dimming control function optimizes brightness and power consumption, and real-time monitoring from the integrated control center allows for immediate detection of malfunctions. In Gwangyang, 203 drainage guide covers were installed, focusing on areas prone to flooding. This is expected to improve drain visibility and prevent flooding accidents.
Park Byeong-hoon, head of the Gyeongbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, said, "The installation of smart streetlights is expected to prevent nighttime accidents and reduce energy costs." Park Jin-man, head of the Jeonnam Regional Headquarters, expressed his gratitude, saying, "The installation of drainage guide covers not only prevents summer flooding but also improves the environment in the industrial complex."
A POSCO representative stated, "This project is an example of collaboration with a global company to ensure the safety of industrial complex workers and local residents. We will continue to pursue various measures to overcome regional crises and foster mutual prosperity."
