【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=이칠구 전 경상북도의회 의원(국민의힘·포항3·재선)이 18일 도의원직을 사퇴하고 포항시장 선거에 본격 뛰어들었다.
이 전 의원은 이날 도의회에 사직서를 제출해 의장의 허가를 받으며 의원직을 공식 마무리했다. 앞서 지난 11일 포항시청에서 기자회견을 열고 “의회에서 준비한 정책을 이제는 행정의 자리에서 실현하겠다”며 출마 의지를 밝힌 바 있다.
2018년 제11대 경북도의회에 입성한 그는 재선 의원으로 활동하며 약 8년간 의정활동을 펼쳤다. 대표 발의 조례 가운데 본회의를 통과해 공포된 조례는 19건이다.
수소연료전지산업 육성 및 지원 조례, 이차전지산업 육성 및 지원 조례, 스마트 해양수산 인력 육성 조례 등은 포항의 산업 구조 전환과 에너지·해양 기반 확충을 뒷받침하는 입법 성과로 꼽힌다.
2023년에는 대한민국시도의회운영위원장협의회 회장으로 선출돼 지방의회 권한 강화를 위한 제도 개선과 ‘지방의회법 제정’ 논의를 이끌었다.
포항지진과 관련해서는 지진대책특별위원회 위원장을 맡아 원인 규명과 피해 구제를 위한 대응에 나섰으며, 최근 항소심 판결 이후에는 상고심 총력 대응과 광역 단위 법률지원체계 구축을 촉구했다.
이 전 의원은 도정질문과 5분 자유발언을 통해 동해 심해 가스전 개발, 영일만대교 건설, 포스코형 수소환원제철, K-스틸법 후속 대책 등 지역 현안을 지속 제기해왔다.
포항 북구 흥해 출신인 그는 포항시의원 3선과 두 차례 시의회 의장을 거쳐 도의회 재선 의원으로 활동했다. 이 전 의원은 “이제는 행정의 책임자로서 실행과 성과로 답하겠다”고 말했다.
