주영한국문화원(원장 선승혜)이 현지 시각 19일 ‘차세대 작가전 – 떠오르는 목소리들’ 연계 프로그램으로 ‘작가와의 대화(Artist Talk)’를 열었다. 지난해 11월 27일 개막하여 오는 27일까지 열리는 전시는 젊은 한국 작가들의 예술 활동을 지원하고 불확실성의 시대를 살아가는 한 세대의 다양한 예술적 목소리를 소개하고자 마련된 이번 공모전이었다.
공모전은 현대미술의 메카 영국의 주요 미술 기관에서 활동 중인 큐레이터 3인이 심사위원으로 참가하여 작품의 완성도와 글로벌 미술계 진출에 대한 비전 적인 관점을 공정하게 심의하였다. 심사위원으로 참가한 3인은 다음과 같다.
다프네 추(Daphne Chu): 버밍엄 아이콘 갤러리 큐레이터이자 예술 프로듀서, 작가로, 최근 공예와 현대미술의 관계를 탐구한 전시 Thread the Loom을 기획하였다. 이전에는 개념미술가 리 밍웨이(Lee Mingwei)의 스튜디오 매니저로 70여 개 국제 전시를 진행하였다.
알빈 리(Alvin Li): 테이트 모던 국제미술부 큐레이터로, 테이트 모던 현대 커미션 이미래 전시를 비롯해 영국과 아시아 주요 미술 기관에서 다수의 전시를 기획하였다. frieze, Art forum, e-flux 등 국제 매체에 글을 기고하며, 베니스비엔날레 예술 고문을 역임하였다.
융 마(Yung Ma): 런던 헤이워드 갤러리 수석 큐레이터로, 양혜규 작가의 개인전을 비롯하여 다수의 전시를 기획하였다. 제11회 서울미디어시티비엔날레 예술감독을 역임하였으며, 파리 퐁피두센터와 홍콩 M+에서 현대미술 및 영상 부문 큐레이터로 활동하였다.
심사를 통하여 선정된 작가는 노희영, 안상범, 이유민, 전우진, 조 재, 조지훈, 주우진, 최수현으로 총 8명의 작가가 선정되었다. 각 작가의 예술적 특성은 다음과 같다.
노희영-집단의 역사와 개인의 기억을 교차시켜 세대 간에 전이되는 트라우마와 감정의 흔적을 탐구한다. 일상 속 공간과 사물을 통해 상처와 회복의 양가적 감정을 섬세하게 시각화한다.
안상범-자연과 기술의 얽힘을 주제로, 생명과 비생명, 질서와 붕괴의 경계를 영상으로 탐구한다. 기술이 생태 위기를 가속 화하는 아이러니를 드러내며 새로운 시간 감각을 제시한다.
이유민-자본주의와 정보화 사회 속에서 사라짐과 생존의 순환을 다루며, 인간성과 주체성의 붕괴를 성찰한다. 영상과 서사를 통해 기술이 감정과 신념을 대체하는 시대의 불안을 드러낸다.
전우진-산업적 재료와 가정용 오브제를 결합해 젠더와 물질의 경계를 흔드는 조각 설치를 선보인다. 단단함과 부드러움, 남성과 여성의 상반된 속성이 긴장 속에 공존한다.
조 재-기술 문화의 가속 속에서 인식과 감각이 형성되는 방식을 탐구한다. 회화와 조각, 디지털 이미지를 결합해 감각의 재조정과 사유의 ‘휴식’을 제안한다.
조지훈-조각을 변화와 적응의 구조로 바라보며, 이동성과 재구성을 통해 불확실한 세계의 생존 방식을 탐색한다. 맥락과 기능의 전환을 통해 사물의 의미와 기억을 새롭게 정의한다.
주우진-신화와 민속, 샤머니즘 등 비이성적 지식을 토대로 일상에서 새로운 상상과 변화를 모색한다. 버려진 재료와 상징적 이미지를 결합해 현대적 신화의 가능성을 열어낸다.
최수현-2022년 반고흐 ‘해바라기’ 훼손 시위를 모티브로 진품과 모방, 보존과 오염이 뒤엉킨 모순을 시각화했다. 이를 통해 미술관의 보호와 배제 대상을 질문하며 예술 제도의 권력과 역할을 재조명한다.
이번 전시가 중요한 이유는 단순하게 ‘젊다’라는 특성 때문이 아닌 작가들의 시선이 현재 상황을 주시하는 감성이 뛰어나기 때문이다. 각자의 언어와 주제가 분명히 다름에도 모든 작업은 불안정한 시대를 사는 한 세대의 공통된 질문을 품고 있다. 또한 작품은 한국적 정체성에 갇히지 않고 세계 미술계에서 통용되는 감각과 문법을 스스로 변주하며 확장하고 있다.
이 전시는 단순한 발굴을 넘어 한국 현대미술의 새로운 좌표를 제시하고 있다. 젊은 작가들이 그려낸 세계는 이미 한국이라는 국적을 넘어 불확실성의 시대를 살아가는 공유된 감성에서 빚어진 신선한 상상력과 승화된 예술성을 담아내어 예술이 지금 이 시대의 현실에 어떻게 응답할 수 있는지와 예술이 어떻게 세계의 균열을 기록하고 감당할 수 있는지를 설득력 있게 증명하였다.
19일 열린 전시 연계 프로그램인 ‘작가와의 대화에는 선정 작가 중 이유민, 주우진, 최수현 작가가 참여해 각자의 작업 세계와 비전에 대해 공유하는 시간을 가졌다.
선승혜 주영한국문화원장은 기획에 대하여 “차세대 작가들이 제 뜻을 펼치는 목소리를 듣는 일은 바로 새로운 미래를 만들어 가는 토대입니다. 라면서 예술가들이 다양하고 중층적인 감정을 예술이라는 형식으로 세상과 연결되어 공감될 때 한국의 미학은 21세기 시대사상이 될 것입니다.라고 말했다.

이번 작가와의 대화에 참여한 세 작가는 영상 설치 텍스타일 등 서로 다른 매체를 활용해 예술의 가치와 디지털 환경에서의 가시성과 문화적 신념 체계를 주제로 작업을 이어가고 있다.
이번 행사는 전시 기획을 맡은 차재민 큐레이터의 기획 의도 및 전시 구성에 대한 설명으로 시작되었으며 이후, 세 작가가 각자의 작업 배경과 문제의식 그리고 작품의 제작 과정을 소개했다. 이어진 질의응답 시간에는 관객과의 자유로운 토론이 진행되면서 다양한 의견과 질문이 오갔다.
행사에 참석한 영국인 마크 바움필드(Mark Baumfield)는 “동시대 한국 작가들의 작업을 직접 듣고 논의할 수 있는 의미 있는 자리였다.”라며 “각기 다른 작업 방식이 공통의 문제의식으로 연결되는 점이 인상 깊었다.”라고 소감을 전했다.
차재민 주영한국문화원 전시 큐레이터는 “차세대 작가전은 한국 청년 예술인의 창작 역량을 국제 무대에 소개하고 그 외연을 확장하는 데 의미가 있는 전시”라면서 이번 작가와의 대화를 통해 동시대 한국 미술의 다양한 실천과 문제의식을 현지 관객과 공유함으로써 지속 가능한 창작 생태계와 국제 문화 교류의 기반을 강화하는 계기가 되었다. 라고 밝혔다. artwww@naver.com

K-ART Next Generation Artists Exhibition held in London, UK - "Artist Talk"

The Korean Cultural Centre UK (Director Seon Seung-hye) held "Artist Talk" on the 19th (local time) as part of its "Next Generation Artists Exhibition - Emerging Voices." The exhibition, which opened on November 27th of last year and runs until the 27th, was designed to support the artistic activities of young Korean artists and showcase the diverse artistic voices of a generation living in uncertain times.
The competition was judged by three curators working at leading art institutions in the UK, a mecca of contemporary art. The judges evaluated the works on their completeness and their visionary perspectives on entering the global art scene. The three judges are as follows:
Daphne Chu: A curator, art producer, and writer at Birmingham's Icon Gallery, she recently curated Thread the Loom, an exhibition exploring the relationship between craft and contemporary art. Previously, she was the studio manager for conceptual artist Lee Mingwei, curating over 70 international exhibitions.
Alvin Li: A curator in the International Art Department at Tate Modern, she has curated numerous exhibitions at major art institutions in the UK and Asia, including the Tate Modern Contemporary Commission: Future. She has written for international publications such as frieze, Artforum, and e-flux, and served as an artistic advisor for the Venice Biennale.
Yung Ma: Senior Curator at the Hayward Gallery in London, she has curated numerous exhibitions, including a solo exhibition by artist Haegue Yang. She served as Artistic Director of the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale and has curated the contemporary art and video departments at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and M+ in Hong Kong.
Eight artists were selected through a judging process: Noh Hee-young, Ahn Sang-beom, Lee Yu-min, Jeon Woo-jin, Jo Jae, Jo Ji-hoon, Joo Woo-jin, and Choi Su-hyun. Each artist's artistic characteristics are as follows:
Noh Hee-young interweaves collective history with individual memories to explore the traces of trauma and emotions transmitted between generations. Through everyday spaces and objects, she delicately visualizes the ambivalent emotions of wounds and healing.
Ahn Sang-beom explores the intertwining of nature and technology through video, exploring the boundaries between life and non-life, order and collapse. He reveals the irony of technology accelerating the ecological crisis and presents a new sense of time.
Lee Yu-min explores the cycle of disappearance and survival in a capitalist and information society, reflecting on the collapse of humanity and subjectivity. Through video and narrative, she reveals the anxiety of an era in which technology replaces emotion and belief.
Jeon Woo-jin combines industrial materials with household objects to create sculptural installations that challenge the boundaries of gender and materiality. Hardness and softness, masculine and feminine contrasting qualities coexist in tension.
Cho Jae - Explores how perception and sensation are formed in the accelerated pace of technological culture. Combining painting, sculpture, and digital images, he proposes a recalibration of the senses and a "rest" for thought.
Cho Ji-hoon - Views sculpture as a structure of change and adaptation, exploring ways of surviving in an uncertain world through mobility and reconstruction. He redefines the meaning and memory of objects through shifts in context and function.
Cho Woo-jin - Drawing on irrational knowledge such as mythology, folklore, and shamanism, he explores new imaginations and transformations in everyday life. Combining discarded materials and symbolic images, he opens up the possibilities of modern myth.
Choi Soo-hyun - Inspired by the protests against the vandalism of Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in 2022, he visualizes the contradictions entangled between authenticity and imitation, preservation and contamination. Through this, he questions the protection and exclusion of museums, reexamining the power and role of the art system.
The significance of this exhibition lies not simply in their youth, but in the artists' exceptional sensitivity to the current situation. While their language and themes differ distinctly, all their works embody the common questions of a generation living in an unstable era. Furthermore, the works are not confined to a Korean identity, but rather inflect and expand upon the sensibilities and grammar commonly used in the global art world.
This exhibition goes beyond mere discovery, offering a new perspective for Korean contemporary art. The worlds depicted by these young artists transcend Korean nationality, embodying fresh imagination and sublimated artistry born from a shared sensibility living in an age of uncertainty. They compellingly demonstrate how art can respond to the realities of our time and how it can document and address the fractures of the world.
On the 19th, a program related to the exhibition, "Artist Dialogue," featured selected artists Lee Yu-min, Joo Woo-jin, and Choi Soo-hyun, who shared their artistic visions and perspectives.
Seon Seung-hye, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre UK, commented on the project, saying, "Hearing the voices of next-generation artists expressing their own vision is the foundation for creating a new future. When artists connect their diverse and multi-layered emotions with the world through art and empathize with it, Korean aesthetics will become a 21st-century ideology."

The three artists participating in this artist dialogue are working across diverse media, including video, installation, and textiles, exploring the value of art, visibility in the digital environment, and cultural belief systems.
The event began with an explanation of the exhibition's purpose and structure by curator Cha Jae-min. The three artists then shared their respective backgrounds, critical thinking, and creative processes. The Q&A session that followed was a free-flowing discussion with the audience, generating diverse opinions and questions.
Mark Baumfield, a British participant, said, "Hearing the work of contemporary Korean artists firsthand was a truly enriching experience." "It was a meaningful opportunity for discussion," he said, adding, "It was impressive how different working methods connected to a common awareness of issues."
Cha Jae-min, exhibition curator at the Korean Cultural Centre UK, stated, "The Next Generation Artists Exhibition is significant in introducing the creative capabilities of young Korean artists to the international stage and expanding their scope.
