“밥 잘 차려주는 엄마보다 지금의 엄마가 훨씬 좋아.”
워킹맘으로 앞만 보고 달리던 한 여성의 삶을 송두리째 바꾼 건 딸의 이 짧은 한마디였다. 국회 보좌관으로서 안양의 굵직한 현안을 해결해온 최경순 저자가 자신의 치열한 삶과 정치적 여정을 담은 에세이 ‘정치하는 엄마의 고해성사’를 펴냈다.
지난 22일 오후 3시 30분 안양아트센터 컨벤션홀에서 열린 출판기념회는 찬바람에 몸이 움츠러드는 날씨에다 휴일 오후 시간임에서 약 200여명의 청중들이 몰려들어 성황을 이루었다. 최대호 안양시장, 강득구 의원 등 주요 인사들의 축사도 풍성했다. 본행사 직전에는 만안구 학부형 엄마들로 구성된 ‘짱샘댄스크루’의 발랄한 허슬댄스로 행사장에 생기를 불어넣었다.

정치인의 저서라고 하면 흔히 화려한 경력과 장밋빛 공약을 떠올리기 마련이다. 하지만 이 책은 정반대의 길을 택했다. 저자는 ‘엄마’라는 이름 앞에 스스로 무릎을 꿇는다. 일터에서는 유능한 ‘알파걸’이었지만, 정작 두 딸의 마음은 세밀하게 살피지 못했던 미숙함을 ‘고해성사’라는 제목 아래 투명하게 드러낸다.
저자는 진행 서두에서 “딸들은 나의 스승이다”라고 고백했다. 엄마의 권위로 가르치려 들기보다, “딸들의 날카로운 비판을 온몸으로 받아내며 ‘경청의 근육’을 키웠다.”고 설명했다. 가족 내에서의 갈등과 화해는 그를 더 단단한 어른으로 만들었고, 이는 곧 시민의 목소리를 대하는 정치적 자산이 됐다고 밝혔다.
한편 책의 2부 ‘정치하는 엄마’에는 안양의 내일을 설계해온 현장 전문가로서의 기록이 고스란히 담겼다. 저자는 24년간 도심의 흉물로 방치됐던 안양역 앞 폐건물 철거를 이끌어내고, 58년 동안 닫혀 있던 서울대 수목원 산책로를 시민의 품으로 돌려준 과정은 ‘현장에 답이 있다’는 저자의 신념을 증명한다.
특히 박달스마트밸리 사업과 안양시청 이전 추진 등 지역의 해묵은 숙원 사업들을 정면으로 돌파해온 저자의 행보는 ‘효능감 있는 정치’가 무엇인지 보여준다. 저자는 이 모든 성과가 거창한 구호가 아닌, 시민의 일상을 귀하게 여기는 마음에서 시작됐다고 강조한다.

최경순 저자는 은광여고와 이화여대 행정학과를 거쳐 안양교육희망네트워크 대표, 경기도기후행동위원회 위원 등을 역임하며 지역 공동체의 가치를 일구어왔다.
지난 제8회 전국동시지방선거에서는 경기 안양시 경기도의원 제2선거구(안양 2동, 박달 1·2동, 석수 1·2·3동)에서 출마하여 낙선한 바 있다. 이후 더욱 낮은 자세로 지역의 민생현안 지역민의 민원 해결을 위해 숨 가쁘게 달려왔다. 아직 경쟁구도가 흐릿한 가운데 강득구 현역 국회의원과의 든든한 파트너쉽과 성실한 지역 활동 경륜으로 지역민의 두터운 지지를 받고 있다는 여론이 우세하다.
그는 마지막으로 “안양은 내가 35년을 살았고 내 딸들이 평생을 살아온 터전”이라며, “가정에서 배운 소통의 힘을 공적 영역에서 펼쳐, 시민들이 체감할 수 있는 다정한 변화를 만들고 싶다”고 굳게 약속했다.

Author Choi Kyung-soon, who has addressed Anyang's major issues as a National Assembly aide, has published an essay, "Confessions of a Political Mom," detailing her intense life and political journey.
The book launch, held at 3:30 p.m. on the 22nd at the Anyang Arts Center Convention Hall, was a huge success, attracting approximately 200 attendees despite the chilly weather and the holiday afternoon. Congratulatory remarks were also delivered by key figures, including Anyang Mayor Choi Dae-ho and Assemblyman Kang Deuk-gu. Just before the main event, the "Jjangsam Dance Crew," comprised of mothers from Manan District, enlivened the venue with a lively hustle dance performance.
When you think of a politician's book, you often think of a glamorous career and rosy promises. However, this book takes the opposite approach. The author bows before the title "mother." While she was a competent "alpha girl" at work, she transparently reveals her lack of understanding of her two daughters' inner feelings, a fact she failed to fully grasp under the title "Confession."
At the beginning of the book, the author confessed, "My daughters are my teachers." Rather than trying to teach with maternal authority, she explained, "I developed my 'muscles of listening' by enduring my daughters' sharp criticisms." She explained that the conflict and reconciliation within her family made her a stronger adult, a political asset that she now uses to address the voices of her constituents.
Meanwhile, the second part of the book, "A Mother in Politics," contains her meticulous account as a field expert who has shaped Anyang's future. The author's actions, including leading the demolition of the abandoned building in front of Anyang Station, which had been an eyesore in the city for 24 years, and returning the Seoul National University Arboretum trail, closed for 58 years, to the public, demonstrate her belief that "the answer lies in the field."
In particular, the author's actions in addressing long-standing local issues, such as the Bakdal Smart Valley project and the Anyang City Hall relocation, demonstrate the essence of "effective politics." The author emphasizes that all these achievements stemmed not from grandiose slogans, but from a heart that values the everyday lives of citizens.
Author Choi Kyung-soon, a graduate of Eungwang Girls' High School and Ewha Womans University's Department of Public Administration, has served as the head of the Anyang Education Hope Network and a member of the Gyeonggi Climate Action Committee, fostering the value of local communities.
He finally said, “Anyang is where I have lived for 35 years and where my daughters have lived their entire lives,” and made a firm promise, “I want to use the power of communication I learned at home in the public sphere to create a warm and caring change that citizens can feel.”
