[브레이크뉴스 양주=김완영 기자] 경기도 양주시는 오는 3월 3일부터 전철 1호선 급행열차가 덕계역에 추가 정차한다고 23일 밝혔다. 향후 덕계역을 이용하는 시민들의 교통 편의가 크게 향상될 전망이다.
그동안 양주(옥정, 회천)신도시의 인구 유입으로 1호선 이용 수요는 크게 증가했으나, 부족한 열차 배차로 인해 시민들의 교통 불편이 지속돼왔다.
특히 덕계역은 2022년 회천신도시 입주 시작 이후 열차 이용 수요가 2배 이상 증가했으나, 하루 운행 횟수는 121회에 불과해 낮 시간대 배차 간격이 최대 50분까지 벌어지는 등 시민들의 열차 이용에 어려움이 컸다.
시는 이를 해결하기 위해 ‘덕계역 급행 추가 정차’를 주요 과제로 추진해왔다. 지역 국회의원실과 협력해 국토교통부와 코레일에 인구 증가 추이, 이용 수요 증가, 시민들의 염원, 신도시 입주민들을 위한 ‘선교통 후입주’ 정책 방향 등 덕계역 급행 추가 정차의 필요성과 당위성을 지속적으로 건의해 왔다.
