충남도 수산자원연구소가 고갈되어 가는 연안 어족 자원을 되살리기 위해 대규모 꼼치 방류 사업에 나섰다.
이를 위해 충남도 수산자원연구소는 도내 해역의 수산자원 회복과 어업 소득 증대를 목적으로 꼼치 종자 약 100만 마리를 순차적으로 방류한다고 25일 밝혔다.
연구소는 이날 1차분인 37만 마리를 우선 방류했으며, 오는 다음 달 중으로 남은 63만 마리를 추가 방류해 총 100만 마리 규모의 자원을 조성할 방침이다.
흔히 '물메기'로 불리는 꼼치는 겨울철 어업인들의 주요 소득원 중 하나다. 특히 1년생 어류로서 성장 속도가 매우 빠르기 때문에 방류 후 단기간 내에 자원 조성 효과를 체감할 수 있다는 장점이 있다.
하지만 최근 도내 꼼치 어획량은 지난 2020년 1,098톤에서 지난해 666톤까지 급격히 줄어든 상태다.
이에 연구소는 자원 확보를 위해 보령 인근 해역에서 확보한 어미 꼼치의 산란을 유도하고, 육상수조에서 직접 수정란을 관리해 건강한 종자를 생산했다. 또한 방류 전 철저한 질병 검사를 거쳐 안전하고 우량한 종자임을 검증하는 과정을 거쳤다.
수산자원연구소 관계자는 수산자원 회복과 어업인 소득 증대를 위해 꼼치뿐만 아니라 대하, 꽃게, 주꾸미 등 서해안을 대표하는 주요 어종에 대해서도 지속적인 방류 사업을 추진할 예정이라고 밝혔다.
