이재명 대통령이 1일(현지시간) 싱가포르 현지 동포들과 만나 "재외국민들이 불편함 없도록 커뮤니티를 구성해 활동하는 데 지장 없도록 최대한 지원하고 함께하도록 하겠다"고 밝혔다.
동남아 2개국 순방에 나선 이 대통령은 이날 저녁 싱가포르 리츠 칼튼호텔에서 열린 동포 만찬 간담회 인사말에서 "한·싱가포르는 전략적 동반자 관계로 협력 수준을 한 단계 높이고 미래지향적 협력에 본격화하고 있다"며 "서로에 가장 이상적 파트너가 될 수 있다"고 했다.
그러면서 "최근 전 세계 동포사회 민원·건의 사항 전수 조사를 외교부에 지시해 현재 약 1400개 민원·건의·소망 사항을 접수하고 검토했다"며 "역대 정부에서 한 번도 시도 않은 획기적이고 방대한 작업"이라고 했다.
이어 "전 세계 700만명이 넘는 재외동포가 문제 제기하는 민원이 1400개밖에 안 될리 없는데 아마 이건 앞으로 재외공관이 더 많이 재외국민을 접하고 의견 수렴할 필요가 있다는 걸 보여주는 것"이라며 "앞으로도 정부는 재외동포 여러분이 어디 계시든 차별 없이 존중받고 더 큰 기회를 가질 수 있도록 든든하게 뒷받침해 나갈 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
