The clash between the ruling and opposition parties over the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Special Administrative Integration Act escalated into a full-blown confrontation.

The Democratic Party of Korea pushed through the South Jeolla and Gwangju Special Act while refusing to re-discuss the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Special Act. This prompted fierce opposition from incumbent lawmakers running for Daegu mayor, who called it "clear regional discrimination."

The day before the incident, at the February 28th Democratic Movement Memorial Ceremony, People Power Party lawmaker Choo Kyung-ho met directly with Prime Minister Kim Min-seok and requested the swift passage of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Special Act. Choo emphasized that it was "the wish of the five million citizens of the city," and urged the government to take action. Prime Minister Kim responded, "If that's the overall sentiment, then I understand. I will do so."

However, the same night, the mood shifted dramatically. The Democratic Party pushed through only the South Jeolla and Gwangju Special Act in the National Assembly, refusing to re-discuss the Daegu-Gyeongbuk bill altogether. Rep. Choo immediately issued a statement, strongly condemning the move as "a discriminatory act of regionalism that tramples on the aspirations of 5 million Daegu and Gyeongbuk residents."

He criticized the Democratic Party, saying, "The People Power Party followed all the procedures proposed by the Democratic Party, including ending the filibuster and adopting a party platform," but added, "The Democratic Party blocked the passage of the bill with far-fetched arguments." He then targeted Democratic Party leader Chung Cheong-rae and Chairwoman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee Choo Mi-ae, demanding, "Stop making excuses. Convene the Legislation and Judiciary Committee now and pass the TK integration bill, just like the South Jeolla and Gwangju special laws." He also warned, "If the Democratic Party doesn't pass it by March 3rd, they will face the wrath and judgment of the TK residents."

Vice Speaker Joo Ho-young also supported the move on Facebook. He stated, "There is no longer any reason to delay the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Special Act. The Legislation and Judiciary Committee, not the Senate, is deviating from its original role by using regional differences as an excuse to hold up a bill that passed the Public Administration and Security Committee." He also took issue with the Gwangju-Jeonnam bill and the unfair processing speed. Vice Speaker Joo criticized the bill, calling it "an outrage that goes against principle and fairness."

Representative Yoon Jae-ok also criticized the Democratic Party's stance in a public statement on the 2nd, calling it a "petty hostage-taking." He criticized, "The People Power Party accepted all the requested conditions, but the Democratic Party continues to propose new ones, such as a 'public apology' and 'integration of Daejeon and South Chungcheong Province.' They have revealed that they have no intention of processing the TK integration bill in the first place." He continued to call for a "one-point Legislation and Judiciary Committee meeting" by March 3rd, asserting, "If the bill fails to pass, the Democratic Party will be held fully accountable."

Both inside and outside the political world, there is analysis that the Democratic Party is using its majority in the ruling party to seize control of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and adjust the level of pressure.

At the same time, there are concerns that if the TK integration bill ultimately stalls, the controversy over "regional discrimination" will backfire.

With only one day remaining until the extraordinary session of the National Assembly ends on March 3rd, the head-on clash between the ruling and opposition parties over the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration special law is reaching its final climax.
