년초 국립중앙박물관 기자간담회 당시 유홍준 관장으로부터 ‘새로 쓰는 화인열전 겸재 정선’ 책을 선물로 받았다.
어린 시절부터 표구상을 하시는 형님 덕에 한국화를 보고 자랐고 붓의 행보와 먹의 濃淡농담을 살펴 그림의 깊이를 느끼고 감상을 하였다. 그런데 한국화 대가들의 작품을 보며 더 깊은 경지를 헤아리지 못함을 아쉬워하였는데 책을 통하여 겸재 작품을 체계적으로 읽고 볼 수 있었다.
우리 문화유산의 아름다움과 가치를 대중에게 전해 온 유홍준 관장께서 이번에는 한국 회화사의 거장들을 조명하는 작업에 나섰다는 점에서 더욱 뜻 깊게 다가왔다. 그 시작이 바로 진경산수화를 개척한 겸재 정선이라는 사실은 상징적으로 느껴졌다.
겸재 정선은 조선 후기 회화의 흐름을 바꾸어 놓은 화가로 평가된다. 이전까지의 산수화가 중국의 이상적인 풍경을 본떠 그리거나 관념적 세계를 표현하는 데 머물렀다면, 그분은 직접 눈으로 보고 발로 걸으며 마주한 우리 산천을 화폭에 담았다.
이렇게 탄생한 ‘진경산수’는 단순한 화풍의 변화가 아니라 우리 자연을 우리 시선으로 바라보려는 자각의 표현이었다. 그 순간 조선의 산천은 비로소 그림 속에서 자기 얼굴을 갖게 되었다.
