<브레이크뉴스 원주 = 김일웅 기자> 강원특별자치도 원주시가 글로벌 AI 기술의 선두 주자인 엔비디아(NVIDIA)와 연계해 대한민국 '디지털헬스케어 AI 혁신 거점'으로 도약하기 위한 거대한 닻을 올렸다.
원주시는 과학기술정보통신부, 정보통신산업진흥원, 강원특별자치도와 공동으로 총사업비 350억 원 규모의 '디지털헬스케어 기반 AI 융합혁신 허브 조성사업'을 본격 추진한다고 밝혔다.
이 사업의 핵심은 원주에 디지털헬스케어 산업에 특화된 AI 인재 양성 교육 거점인 이른바 '원주 AI 사관학교'를 구축하는 것이다. 최근 전담 기관 간의 사업 협약을 마친 원주시는 17일 착수보고회를 시작으로 본격적인 실무 절차에 돌입한다. 올해에만 국비 35억 원을 포함해 총 50억 원의 예산이 투입될 예정이다.

가장 눈길을 끄는 대목은 글로벌 AI 칩 선두 기업인 엔비디아의 '디엘아이(DLI, Deep Learning Institute)' 기반 교육과정이 도입된다는 점이다. 원주시는 엔비디아 및 파트너사인 리드텍과 협력해 올해 상반기 중 세부 교육과정 개발을 완료할 계획이다.

교육은 ▲AI 기본 과정 ▲디지털헬스케어 버티컬 AI ▲디지털헬스케어 로봇(피지컬 AI) ▲디지털트윈 ▲산업 실무 등 5개 전문 트랙으로 세분화되어, 의료데이터 분석과 AI 모델 개발을 아우르는 초밀착 실무형으로 진행된다. 시는 향후 마이크로소프트(MS), 에이더블유에스(AWS) 등 다양한 글로벌 IT 기업의 교육 프로그램도 단계적으로 도입해 개방형 AI 교육 플랫폼을 완성한다는 구상이다.
해당 교육 프로그램은 준비 과정을 거쳐 2026년 9월 시범 운영(160명 양성, AI 모델 23건 개발 목표)을 시작하며, 2027년부터 정식 운영에 들어간다.

원주시 관계자는 "원주는 국민건강보험공단과 건강보험심사평가원을 필두로 한 방대한 공공 의료데이터와 200여 개의 의료기기 기업이 집적된 국내 최고의 디지털헬스케어 인프라를 갖추고 있다"며, "AI 사관학교를 통해 인재 양성과 산업 실증이 동시에 이루어지는 완벽한 혁신 생태계를 구축, 디지털헬스케어 산업의 AI 전환을 선도하는 핵심 도시로 자리매김하겠다"고 포부를 밝혔다.
