브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 조현 외교부 장관이 중동 정세와 관련한 한국 군함 파병 가능성에 대해 “단정하기 어렵다”고 신중한 입장을 밝혔다.
조 장관은 17일 국회 외교통일위원회 전체회의에 출석해 미국의 호르무즈 해협 군함 파병 요청 여부를 묻는 질의에 대해 “미측과 긴밀히 협의해 오는 과정에서 요청이라고 할 수도 있고, 안 할 수도 있는 상황”이라고 말했다.
이어 그는 “현재 언론 보도처럼 다소 혼란스러운 상황”이라며 “호르무즈 해협 이슈와 관련해 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 발언과 SNS 등을 주시하면서 한미 간 다양한 채널로 중동 상황을 포함한 현안에 대해 긴밀히 소통하고 있다”고 설명했다.
조 장관은 전날 마코 루비오 미국 국무장관과 통화한 것과 관련해서는 “중동 사태 전반에 대한 의견을 교환했다”며 “미국 측은 호르무즈 해협의 안전과 항행의 자유가 여러 국가의 이익에 부합한다는 점을 강조했고, 이에 대한 협력과 기여 방안에 대해 논의가 있었다”고 밝혔다.
다만 파병 여부에 대한 직접적인 논의가 있었는지를 묻는 질의엔 “현재로서는 답변드리기 곤란하다”며 구체적인 언급을 피했다.
미국 측의 발언을 사실상 파병 요구로 봐야 하는 것이냐는 질문에도 “그렇게 간주하는 것은 무리가 있다”며 “통화 내용을 ‘파병’으로 단정하기에는 부족한 측면이 있다”고 선을 그었다.
조 장관은 파병이 헌법 위반 소지가 있다는 지적에 대해서는 “모든 결정은 헌법과 법률에 따라 이뤄질 것”이라며 “정부가 어떤 결정을 내리든 관련 법적 절차를 준수하겠다”고 원론적인 답변만 내놨다.
한편 조 장관은 다음 주 프랑스 파리 인근에서 열리는 G7 외교장관 회담을 계기로 루비오 장관과 직접 만나 중동 정세를 논의할 예정이다. 그는 “한국을 포함한 3개국이 초청을 받아 참석하게 되면 해당 계기에서 양자 면담이 이뤄질 것으로 보인다”고 말했다.
