최근 정부가 공공의대와 지역의대 설립을 통해 2030년부터 각각 100명의 신입생을 선발하는 ‘의과대학 학생 정원 배정안’을 발표하면서, 경북 북부권 65만 주민의 숙원사업인 국립의과대학 설립 기대감이 높아지고 있다.
그동안 안동시는 열악한 의료 인프라 개선과 지역 간 의료격차 해소를 위해 국립의과대학 유치 활동을 지속적으로 추진해왔다. 앞으로는 대학과 지역이 상생할 수 있는 구체적인 실행 전략을 마련해 유치 효과를 극대화한다는 방침이다.
주요 전략으로는 원도심 유휴시설을 활용한 캠퍼스 조성과 지역 의료기관과의 협력체계 구축, 도청 신도시 의료환경 개선, 경북 북부권 의료거점 조성 등이 제시됐다.
특히 원도심 내 유휴부지인 구 안동경찰서 부지와 이전이 검토 중인 안동의료원 부지를 활용해 의과대학 캠퍼스를 조성하는 방안이 핵심이다. 이를 통해 도심 공동화 문제를 완화하고 청년층 유입을 유도해 원도심에 활력을 불어넣겠다는 구상이다.
지역 의료기관과의 협력도 강화한다. 안동병원, 성소병원, 안동의료원 등 관내 종합병원과 연계해 공동 수련병원 체계를 구축하고, 향후 상급종합병원 설립 시 진료 기능 분담과 임상연구 네트워크를 확대해 지역 의료체계의 질적 향상을 도모할 계획이다.
이와 함께 도청 신도시 2단계 개발지구 내 메디컬 콤플렉스에 상급종합병원을 유치하고, 도심과 신도시를 연결하는 도로망 확충을 통해 북부권 전역에서 1시간 내 접근 가능한 의료 인프라를 구축한다는 전략도 추진된다.

안동시 관계자는 “국립의과대학 유치는 도민의 생명권과 직결된 중요한 과제”라며 “의과대학이 교육기관을 넘어 지역 인구 유입과 도심 활성화를 이끄는 핵심 거점이 될 수 있도록 모든 행정 역량을 집중하겠다”고 밝혔다.
