불은 약 1시간 20분 만인 오후 1시 22분에 완전히 꺼졌으나 지하 공간의 특성상 발생한 검은 연기가 대합실과 승강장으로 빠르게 퍼지면서 현장은 순식간에 아수라장이 됐다.
대구교통공사는 사고 직후 진천역 양방향 열차를 무정차 통과시키고 역사 출입을 전면 통제했다. 소방 당국 역시 신고 4분 만에 현장에 도착해 대대적인 진압과 배연 작업을 벌였다. 다행히 작업자들을 포함해 역사 내 승객 중 인명 피해는 발생하지 않은 것으로 확인됐다. 열차 운행은 안전 점검을 마친 뒤인 오후 3시 8분부터 정상화됐다.
