국회 행정안전위원회 법안심사제1소위원회는 24일 노동절을 법정 공휴일에 포함하는 내용을 골자로 한 ‘관공서의 공휴일에 관한 법률 일부개정법률안’을 의결했다.
앞서 정부는 명칭을 ‘근로자의 날’에서 ‘노동절’로 바꾼 후, 공휴일 지정까지 추진해 왔다.
소위를 통과한 개정안은 행안위 전체회의와 법제사법위원회 심사를 거쳐 국회 본회의에 상정될 예정이다. 여야가 소위에서 합의안을 도출한 만큼, 이변이 없는 한 본회의 통과 가능성이 매우 높은 상황이다
이에 따라 노동절은 추석이나 설날과 같은 국가 공식 공휴일 지위를 얻게 되며, 이르면 올해부터 모든 노동자가 쉴 수 있게 된다.
한편, 노동절은 ‘근로자의 날 제정에 관한 법률’에 따른 유급휴일이었지만, 관공서가 쉬는 ‘법정 공휴일’에는 제외 돼 있었다. 이로 인해 민간 기업 근로자는 쉬는 반면, 공무원과 학교, 시·군·구청 등은 정상 근무를 하면서 노동자 간 차별 논란이 지속적으로 제기돼 왔다.
