러시아에서 유태인들은 가장 많은 수가 자리 잡으면서도 러시아 제국때부터 단 한 번도 제대로 고려되어 본 적이 없었다. 러시아의 역대 짜르들은 유태인들의 권익이나 처우에 대해서 전혀 관심이 없었다. 그들을 러시아인으로 동화시켜야 할지 말아야 할지 생각조차 하지 않았다. 러시아 상인들의 요구에 의해 러시아 상인들과 상업 행위를 보호하고자 일방적으로 박해했었고, 정주지에 대한 수많은 규제 정책을 사용했으며 러시아 제국 말기에는 자신들의 정치적인 필요에 의해 의도적인 포그롬까지 만들어 유태인들을 박해하기까지 했다.
급변기의 소련 정치가들 똑같았다. 그들 역시 처음부터 유태인들의 권익이나 처우에는 조금의 관심도 없었고 자신들의 편익에 의해 유태인들의 동화 정책을 행했으며 분리 정책도 마찬가지였다. 오히려 유태인들이 볼셰비키 혁명에 대거 가담했었고 이들에 의해 러시아 제국이 무너졌다는 것에서 불안감과 두려움을 느꼈다. 그래서 유태인들을 다루는데 있어 명확한 체계도 없었다. 그리고 레닌주의 공산주의자들은 혁명의 와중에서 유태인들을 정치적으로 이용하고 잔혹하게 버리면서 유태인에 대한 뿌리 깊은 혐오 감정을 드러냈다.
유태인이란, 항상 필요에 의해 사용했다 가차 없이 버릴 수 있는 존재로만 인식될 뿐이었다. 반면 러시아 유태인들은의 삶은 매우 비참했다. 그들은 소련의 공산 통치 속에서 고독한 삶을 영위했다. 일반 유태인들은 러시아인들 사이에서 고립되어 두려움 속에 핍박 받으며 생활했으며, 유태계 지식인들과 지성인들은 그나마 러시아에서 대접을 받고 살았다. 이들에게 있어 유태인이란 사실은 그들 자신이 잊어 버리고 싶은 멍에이기도 했다. 그것은 러시아 혁명기 때 거대한 파워가 되어 나타나기도 했고, 자신들의 고향을 찾고자 하는 시오니즘으로 나타나기도 했다. 그러나 그들의 이러한 행위들은 오히려 더욱 강인하게 만들었고, 소련에서 러시아로 바뀐 뒤, 상당수의 부유층 올리가르히 재벌들은 자신들이 유태인이라는 것을 더 이상 숨기지 않았다.
이들은 푸틴 대통령이 올리가르히들을 축출했던 시기에도 정치권이나 경제권에서 살아남았다. 따라서 이들 유태인들은 러시아 내에서도 쉽게 축출할 수 없는 세력이 되어 버렸다. 결국 이들은 푸틴 대통령도, 여당인 통합 러시아당도 감히 어찌할 수 없는 러시아 사회의 큰 세력으로 자리 잡아 오늘에 이르고 있다. 이런 상황에서 이스라엘과 중동 문제에 러시아는 항상 비켜 서 있을 수밖에 없었다. 러시아 제국을 혁명으로 무너뜨린 것도 유태인이고, 소련을 무너뜨린 장본인들 또한 러시아 내 유태인들이다. 러시아 정치 권 또한 120년 전 러시아 제국 때와 다른 유태인들의 위상을 고려하지 않을 수 없다.
이스라엘 문제에 러시아가 직접적으로 개입하지 않는 이유가 여기에 있고, 이스라엘과 맞서는 이란이나 하마스, 헤즈볼라, 예멘을 쉽게 물리적으로 돕지 못하는 이유가 여기에 있다. 그래서 이스라엘 문제만큼은 러시아를 믿어서는 안 된다. 왜냐면 같은 박해를 받으면서도 뿌리 깊게 자리 잡아 러시아의 대표 기득권이 된 유태인을 무시하면 푸틴 대통령 자신의 정치 생명도 보장 받을 수 없기 때문이다. 유태 종자들은 미국이나 집단 서방 뿐 아니라 러시아 내에서도 독버섯처럼 자라나 상당 부분을 삼켜버렸다. 그 이유 때문에 저번 12일 전쟁도 그렇고 현재 전쟁도 마찬가지다. 이란은 상당수의 지원을 중국으로부터 받을 수밖에 없을 것이다.

Why Russia Is Passive on Middle Eastern Issues Surrounding Israel

Despite Jews being the largest ethnic group in Russia, they have never once been properly considered since the time of the Russian Empire. Successive Russian Tsars had absolutely no interest in the rights or treatment of Jews. They did not even consider whether or not to assimilate them into Russian society. They unilaterally persecuted them to protect Russian merchants and commercial activities at the request of Russian merchants, implemented numerous restrictive policies regarding settlements, and, towards the end of the Russian Empire, even went so far as to orchestrate intentional pogroms to persecute Jews for their own political needs.
Soviet politicians during periods of rapid change were exactly the same. From the beginning, they, too, had not the slightest interest in the rights or treatment of Jews; they implemented assimilation policies for their own convenience, and the same applied to policies of separation. Rather, they felt anxiety and fear regarding the fact that Jews had participated in the Bolshevik Revolution in large numbers and that the Russian Empire had collapsed because of them. Consequently, there was no clear system in dealing with Jews. Furthermore, Leninist communists revealed their deep-seated hatred toward Jews by politically exploiting them and cruelly abandoning them amidst the revolution.
Jews were perceived merely as beings to be used when needed and ruthlessly discarded. In contrast, the lives of Russian Jews were extremely miserable. They led solitary lives under Soviet communist rule. Ordinary Jews lived isolated among Russians, persecuted in fear, while Jewish intellectuals and scholars were at least treated with respect in Russia. For them, the fact that they were Jewish was a yoke they wished to forget. This manifested as a massive force during the Russian Revolution and also appeared as Zionism, a movement seeking to reclaim their homeland. However, these actions only made them stronger; after the transition from the Soviet Union to Russia, a significant number of wealthy oligarchs no longer hid the fact that they were Jewish.
These individuals survived in the political and economic spheres even during the period when President Putin purged the oligarchs. Consequently, these Jews have become a force that cannot be easily expelled even within Russia. Ultimately, they have established themselves as a major force in Russian society that neither President Putin nor the ruling United Russia party dare to touch, and this continues to this day. Under these circumstances, Russia has always had no choice but to stand by the sidelines regarding Israel and the Middle East. It was the Jews who brought down the Russian Empire through revolution, and it was also the Jews within Russia who were responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russian political circles, too, cannot ignore the status of the Jews, which is different from that of the Russian Empire 120 years ago.
This is the reason why Russia does not directly intervene in the Israeli issue, and why it cannot easily provide physical assistance to Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, or Yemen, which stand against Israel. Therefore, Russia should not be trusted when it comes to the Israeli issue. This is because if President Putin ignores the Jews—who have become the representative vested interest of Russia despite suffering the same persecution—his own political career cannot be guaranteed. Jewish seeds have grown like poisonous mushrooms not only in the United States and the collective West but also within Russia, swallowing up a significant portion of the population. For this reason, the previous 12-day war was no exception, and the current war is no different. Iran will inevitably have to receive a significant amount of support from China.
