이번 행사는 제2연평해전, 천안함 피격, 연평도 포격전 등 서해를 지키다 희생한 장병들을 추모하고, 참전 장병과 보훈가족의 헌신을 기리기 위해 마련됐다. 이날 행사는 모범회원 표창, 개회사 및 축사, 결의문 낭독 등의 순으로 진행됐다.
김영권 회장은 “서해수호의 날은 나라를 지키기 위해 헌신한 전우들을 다시 떠올리고, 그 뜻을 이어가겠다는 다짐을 새기는 날”이라며 “바쁘신 가운데서도 함께해 주신 회원과 내빈 여러분께 감사드린다”고 말했다. 이어 “우리 지회에서도 지역사회와 함께 보훈의 가치를 알리고, 나라사랑 정신을 다음 세대에 전하는 데 조금이나마 힘을 보태겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편, ‘서해수호의 날’은 북한의 서해 북방한계선(NLL)에서 일어난 북한 도발 사건들의 전사자들을 추모하고 희생과 헌신으로 나라를 지키고자 했던 호국영령들을 위한 국민의 마음을 하나로 모으는 의미 있는 날로, 2016년부터 매년 3월 넷째 금요일로 지정되어 올해 열한 번째 해를 맞이했다.
