몰타 지도를 보면 위쪽의 작은 섬이 고조(Gozo),
아래쪽의 큰 섬이 몰타 본섬이다.
공식 인구는 약 60만 명으로 추산되지만,
단기 영어연수생이나 1년 미만 체류 외국인은 통계에 포함되지 않는 경우가 많아
실제 체감 인구는 훨씬 더 많다.
이 때문에 인구 밀도가 매우 높은 편이며, 전반적으로 항상 붐비는 느낌이 있다.
고조의 인구는 약 3만 명 수준이며,
중심 도시는 빅토리아로 관광객들이 주로 찾는 지역이다.
특히 이곳에는 고조의 상징적인 성곽 도시인
치타델라가 있어 섬 전체를 내려다볼 수 있다.
또한 고조에는 몰타에서 가장 유명한 성당 중 하나인
타피누 대성당이 있다. 이 성당은 기적의 장소로 알려져 있으며,
외딴 들판 한가운데에 자리 잡은 독특한 풍경으로 많은 방문객이 찾는다.
섬 자체가 크지 않아 하루 동안 돌아다니면 주요 명소를 대부분 둘러볼 수 있다.
몰타에서 고조까지는 페리로 약 25분 정도 소요되며 접근성이 좋지만,
쾌속 페리는 바람이 강할 경우 운항이 중단되기도 한다.
고조는 몰타 본섬보다 훨씬 한적하고 자연적인 분위기가 강해,
거주하는 사람들은 비교적 여유로운 생활을 하는 편이다.

It takes about 25 minutes by ferry to get from Malta to Gozo,

Fast ferries may be suspended when winds are strong.
Compared to the main island of Malta,
Gozo is much quieter and more natural,
and people living here tend to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle.

ゴゾ島はマルタ本島に比べてはるかに静かで自然が豊かであり、
ここに住む人々は比較的ゆったりとした生活を送っている。
