대전지역 70여 개 시민사회단체로 구성된 '미래교육을 위한 대전시민교육감 단일화 시민회의(이하 시민회의)'가 지난 3월 30일 성광진 후보를 단일 후보로 선출한 가운데, 이에 불복하며 비난을 이어가고 있는 맹수석 후보를 향해 강력한 유감을 표명했다.
시민회의는 1일 성명서를 통해 "민주진보교육감 단일화를 폄훼하는 것은 곧 주체가 되어 과정을 만들어낸 시민을 폄훼하는 것"이라며, 단일화의 정당성을 부정하는 맹 후보의 행태를 정면으로 비판했다.
성명서에서 시민회의는 이번 단일화가 단순한 수치 비교를 넘어 시민참여단과 여론조사를 결합한 다층적 방식으로 시민의 뜻을 수렴한 '시민 주도형 실험'이었다는 점을 강조했다.
맹 후보가 '1127명'이라는 시민참여단 규모를 들어 대표성이 없다고 주장하는 것에 대해 "과정의 의미를 의도적으로 축소하고 왜곡하는 처사"라고 지적했다.
특히 단일화 과정에 끝까지 함께하지 않고 스스로 자리를 떠난 후보가 결과의 정당성을 문제 삼는 것은 책임 있는 공직 후보자의 태도가 아니라고 못 박았다.

시민회의는 "강재구 후보는 이미 출마 선언을 마친 '후보자가 되려는 사람'으로서 선거법상 단일화 참여에 아무런 문제가 없음을 선관위로부터 확인받았다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "예비후보 등록 여부만을 따지며 사실을 왜곡하는 것은 선거법에 익숙하지 않은 시민들을 호도하려는 정치적 선동"이라며, 초기 5명의 후보가 참여할 당시에는 문제를 제기하지 않다가 이제 와서 절차를 문제 삼는 행태를 '버스가 지나간 뒤 손 흔드는 격'이라고 비판했다.
단일화 과정이 특정 후보의 정치적 명분을 위한 이해관계의 산물이라는 맹 후보의 주장에 대해서는 강력한 책임론을 제기했다.
시민회의는 70여 참여 단체의 명예와 시민들의 진정성을 모독한 발언이라며, 이에 대한 구체적인 근거를 제시할 것을 요구했다.
