<브레이크뉴스 홍천 = 김일웅 기자> 도로변에 방치된 애물단지 나무들이 어려운 이웃의 몸과 마음을 녹이는 따뜻한 땔감으로 탈바꿈했다.
홍천군 화촌면 새마을회는 지난 1일 오전 10시, 봄맞이 지역 환경정비의 일환으로 관내 지장목 제거 작업을 대대적으로 실시하고, 여기서 나온 2톤가량의 목재를 풍천리에 거주하는 취약계층 이웃에게 전달했다고 밝혔다.

이번 활동은 일상생활과 도로 통행에 지장을 주고 안전사고 우려가 있는 방치된 수목을 정비해 쾌적한 마을 환경을 조성하는 한편, 버려질 뻔한 나무를 겨울철 난방이 절실한 가구에 지원함으로써 자원 재활용과 이웃 나눔을 동시에 실천하기 위해 기획됐다.
이날 작업에는 화촌면 새마을회 회원 25명이 두 팔을 걷어붙이고 나섰다. 이들은 굵은 땀방울을 흘리며 지장목을 베어내고, 땔감용으로 알맞게 자른 뒤 대상 가구까지 직접 수집·운반·정리하는 수고로움을 마다하지 않았다. 정성껏 마련된 2톤의 땔감은 해당 가구의 든든한 난방 및 생활 에너지원으로 쓰일 예정이다.

이창훈 회장은 “회원들과 함께 흘린 작은 땀방울이 어려운 이웃에게 실질적인 보탬이 될 수 있어 매우 뿌듯하다”며, “앞으로도 살기 좋은 화촌면을 만들기 위해 지역사회를 향한 헌신과 봉사 활동을 멈추지 않겠다”고 다짐했다.
