[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 가야금 연주자이자 교육자로 국악 발전을 위해 평생을 헌신해 온 김남순 부산대학교(한국음악학과) 명예교수가 50여년간 집념으로 찾아낸 주옥같은 선율로 김병호 산조의 지평을 넓히는 여정을 무대 위에서 펼쳐낸다.
오는 4월 12일 국립국악원 풍류사랑방에서 열리는 이번 공연은 김병호 명인의 원가락을 복원하고 확장하여 산조의 진정한 가치를 재조명하는 자리로 마련된다.
김남순 교수는 1975년 김정숙에게 처음 산조를 사사한 이래, 1982년부터 1993년까지 스승 강문득으로부터 도제식 구음 전수를 받으며 김병호류의 원류를 체득했다. 특히 1990년대 초반 김병호 명인의 조카인 김덕희를 통해 유실되었던 다스름의 존재를 확인하고 이를 전수받으면서 산조의 완전한 형태를 갖추는 결정적인 기틀을 마련했다.
이후 한국콘텐츠진흥원의 문화원형 사업과 미국 로버트 가피아스 교수가 국립국악원에 기증한 아카이브 자료 발굴을 거치며 김병호 산조의 영상과 녹음을 정밀하게 분석했다. 이러한 학문적 토대를 바탕으로 2020년 ‘금암 김병호 산조 원가락 프로젝트’를 발간했으며, 1967년 녹음한 김병호 산조 흐름에 새로운 가락을 삽입하여 더욱 견고한 구성의 긴 산조로 확장하는 성과를 거두었다.

이번 공연은 김병호류 가야금 산조의 원곡이 훼손되지 않도록 유념하면서도 예술적 깊이를 더한 단단한 구성을 선보인다.
프로그램은 1부 주재근과(한양대 겸임교수)의 대담으로 시작하여 2부 산조 한바탕 연주로 이어진다. 다스름부터 진양조, 중모리, 중중모리, 엇모리, 자진모리, 휘모리, 단모리를 거쳐 다시 중모리로 마무리되는 긴 여정을 담아낸다.
연주의 핵심은 기존 가락과 새 가락의 조화에 있다. 장구 송강수(부산시립국악관현악단 악장)와 함께 연구회원들이 기존 가락을 연주하고, 그 사이에 김남순 명예교수가 독주로 선보이는 새 가락과 푸는 가락이 배치되어 입체감을 더한다.
특히 단모리 이후 이어지는 중모리 두 장단은 김병호 산조 특유의 긴장과 이완의 미학을 극대화하며 대미를 장식한다.

이번 무대는 부산대학교 한국음악학과 교수와 부산가야금연주단장을 역임하고, 김해시립가야금연주단 초대음악감독으로서 국악 발전에도 크게 기여한 김남순 명예교수의 집념이 응축된 시간이다.
KBS 국악대상 현악대상 수상자인 그의 깊은 공력에 정효문화재단 대표 주재근의 사회와 서울시 무형유산 제25호 판소리 고법 이수자 송강수의 장구가 더해져 무대의 완성도를 높인다.
또한 최미란(부산가야금연주단 예술감독, 한국음악학 박사), 이세은.조설리.이현주(김해시립가야금연주단).문포근(진주시립국악관현악단 수석) 등 실력파 제자들이 함께 참여하여 김병호류 가야금 산조의 전승과 미래를 향한 힘찬 웅비의 현장을 완성한다.

[Here’s the English version of the article] PNU Professor Emerita Kim Nam-sun Presents a Lifetime of Dedication to Traditional Korean Music Through Kim Byeong-ho’s Gayageum Sanjo
Kim Nam-sun, a gayageum performer, educator, and Professor Emerita of Korean Music at Pusan National University, will showcase on stage the culmination of her lifelong devotion to traditional Korean music. Through melodies discovered over more than five decades of research, she continues the journey of expanding the artistic depth of Kim Byeong-ho’s gayageum sanjo.
The concert will be held on April 12 at the Pungnyu Sarangbang of the National Gugak Center in Seoul. It aims to restore and reinterpret the authentic style of Master Kim Byeong-ho while highlighting the true essence of sanjo.
Professor Kim first studied sanjo under Kim Jeong-sook in 1975, and from 1982 to 1993, she received traditional oral training from her mentor Kang Mun-deuk, deeply absorbing the Kim Byeong-ho lineage. In the early 1990s, she rediscovered the lost daseureum segment through Kim Deok-hee, the nephew of Kim Byeong-ho, thereby restoring the sanjo to its complete form.
Later, through the Cultural Archetype Project of the Korea Creative Content Agency and archival materials donated to the National Gugak Center by Professor Robert Garfias of the University of California, she conducted a detailed analysis of existing recordings and videos of Kim Byeong-ho’s sanjo. Based on these foundations, she published the “Geumam Kim Byeong-ho Sanjo Original Melody Project” in 2020 and extended the piece’s structure by incorporating new melodic passages inspired by the original 1967 recordings.
The upcoming performance preserves the integrity of the original Kim Byeong-ho-style gayageum sanjo while deepening its artistic quality through refined structural balance.
The program begins with a conversation led by Ju Jae-geun, adjunct professor at Hanyang University, followed by a full rendition of the gayageum sanjo. The musical journey flows through daseureum, jinyangjo, jungmori, jungjungmori, eotmori, jajinmori, hwimori, danmori, and returns to jungmori, offering the continuity of a grand sanjo narrative.
The performance centers on the harmony between traditional and new melodies. Ensemble members, together with janggu player Song Kang-su, concertmaster of the Busan Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra, will play the original versions, while Professor Kim interweaves new and interpretive solo sections to add depth and dimension.
In particular, the concluding jungmori sequences following danmori emphasize the signature aesthetics of tension and release that define Kim Byeong-ho’s sanjo, bringing the program to a powerful close.
This performance embodies Professor Kim’s lifelong dedication to the advancement of Korean traditional music. She has served as chair of the Department of Korean Music at Pusan National University, director of the Busan Gayageum Ensemble, and founding music director of the Gimhae Municipal Gayageum Orchestra.
Hosted by Ju Jae-geun, CEO of the Jeonghyo Cultural Foundation, and accompanied by janggu master Song Kang-su, a designated trainee of Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 25 (Pansori Gobeop), the performance will feature several accomplished disciples: Choi Mi-ran, artistic director of the Busan Gayageum Ensemble and Ph.D. in Korean music; Lee Se-eun, Jo Seol-ri, and Lee Hyun-joo of the Gimhae Municipal Gayageum Orchestra; and Moon Po-geun, principal of the Jinju Municipal Gugak Orchestra.
Together, they will create a stage that celebrates the heritage and the forward-looking spirit of the Kim Byeong-ho school of gayageum sanjo.
