【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=6·3 지방선거를 앞두고 포항 지역 불교계가 이철우 경북도지사 예비후보에 대한 공개 지지 입장을 밝혔다.
포항불교사암연합회와 포항불교청년연합회는 지난 5일 포항 문수사 대웅전 앞에서 지지 선언식을 개최하고, 이 후보에 대한 지지 의사를 공식화했다. 이날 행사에는 대한불교조계종 총부무장 철산 성웅스님, 연합회 회장 덕화스님을 비롯한 사암연합회 소속 스님들과 청년연합회 회원들이 참석했다.
이들은 ‘경북의 미래를 위한 이철우 경북도지사 예비후보 지지 선언’ 문구가 적힌 현수막을 내걸고 결의를 다지며, 지역 현안 해결을 위한 리더십 필요성을 강조했다.
포항불교청년연합회 이진우 회장은 “경북이 직면한 다양한 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 행정 경험과 추진력을 겸비한 지도자가 필요하다”며 “이철우 후보가 그 역할을 수행할 적임자”라고 밝혔다.
덕화스님 역시 “경북은 현재 지역 소멸과 산업 구조 변화라는 중대한 전환기에 놓여 있다”며 “이러한 시기일수록 지역의 안정과 화합을 이끌고, 도민 삶의 질 향상을 위한 정책을 지속적으로 추진할 수 있는 리더십이 중요하다”고 말했다.
이어 “이철우 후보가 도정 경험을 바탕으로 이러한 과제를 책임 있게 수행하길 기대한다”며 “지역 불교계 또한 공동체의 일원으로서 사회적 역할을 충실히 해 나가겠다”고 덧붙였다.
포항불교사암연합회는 약 80년의 전통을 가진 지역 불교 단체로, 포항 지역 각 종단 소속 60여 개 사찰이 참여하고 있다.

Ahead of the June 3 local elections, the Buddhist community in Pohang has publicly declared its support for gubernatorial preliminary candidate Lee Cheol-woo of North Gyeongsang Province.
The Pohang Buddhist Temples Association and the Pohang Buddhist Youth Association held a support declaration ceremony on the 5th in front of the main hall of Munsusa Temple, officially announcing their endorsement of Lee’s candidacy.
The event was attended by Venerable Cheolsan Seongung, head of general affairs of the Jogye Order, along with Venerable Deokhwa, president of the Pohang Buddhist Temples Association, other senior monks, and members of the youth association. Participants held banners reading “Declaration of Support for Lee Cheol-woo for the Future of Gyeongbuk,” expressing their collective commitment.
Lee Jin-woo, president of the Pohang Buddhist Youth Association, stated, “To overcome the multiple crises facing Gyeongbuk, leadership with experience and strong execution is essential,” adding, “Candidate Lee Cheol-woo is the right person for the job.”
Venerable Deokhwa also emphasized, “Gyeongbuk is currently at a critical crossroads, facing regional depopulation and industrial transformation. At times like these, it is crucial to have leadership capable of fostering stability and unity, while consistently implementing policies that improve residents’ quality of life.”
He further added, “We hope that Lee Cheol-woo will responsibly carry out these tasks based on his administrative experience, and the Buddhist community will also continue to fulfill its role alongside the local society.”
Meanwhile, the Pohang Buddhist Temples Association is a regional Buddhist organization with an 80-year history and tradition, comprising around 60 temples from various sects across the Pohang area.
