은 존속의 기로에 서 있다.
현재 회원은 단 여섯 명. 모두 여든 전후의 연세로,
긴 세월 봉사의 가치를 지켜온 분들이다.
무료 주차가 가능하다는 이유로 한 시간을 넘게 운전해 모임에 참석하는
그들의 모습은, 한편으로는 존경스럽고 다른 한편으로는 깊은 쓸쓸함을 남긴다.
연회비는 40유로에 불과하지만, 그마저도 부담이 되는 현실. 재정은 사실상 바닥이고,
정기적으로 모일 공간조차 마땅치 않다.
나는 로타리언이자 라이온스 회원으로서,
이 클럽의 인수인계를 위해 부지바에서 세인트 폴스까지 향했다.
그리고 자연스럽게, 머지않아 다가올 나 자신의 모습에 대한 질문과 마주하게 되었다.
‘나도 저 나이가 되면 저 자리에 앉아 있을까.’
그 질문은 단순한 상상이 아니라, 삶과 시간,
그리고 공동체의 의미를 되짚게 만드는 묵직한 울림이었다.
현실적으로 이 클럽은 재건이 필요하다.
새로운 리더십과 체계적인 운영,
그리고 무엇보다 젊은 피의 유입이 절실하다.
나는 아마 회장직을 맡게 될 것이고,
비서와 총무 역시 내가 추천한 인물들로 구성될 가능성이 크다.
말하자면,
이미 방향은 정해져 있다.
문제는 ‘가능하냐’가 아니라 ‘어떻게 하느냐’다.
그러나 이 과정에서 가장 어려운 점은 따로 있다.
바로, 지금까지 이 클럽을 지켜온 어르신들에 대한 마음이다.
그분들은 단순한 ‘문제’가 아니라, 이 클럽의 역사 그 자체다.
효율성과 혁신을 말하기 전에, 우리는 그들의 시간을 존중해야 한다.
그들의 방식은 시대에 뒤처졌을지 몰라도,
그 안에는 공동체를 향한 진심이 담겨 있다.몰타의 작은 도시, 세인트 폴스 베이.
바다를 마주한 이 평온한 지역에
한때 지역사회를 위해 묵묵히 봉사해 온 라이온스 클럽이 있다.
그러나 지금, 그 클럽
세인트 폴스 베이 라이온스 클럽의 재생은 단순한 조직 개편이 아니다.
그것은 세대 간의 연결을 복원하고, 봉사의 의미를 다시 정의하는 일이다.
낡은 것을 버리는 것이 아니라, 이어가는 방식으로 새롭게 만드는 작업이다.
나는 이 클럽을 성공적으로 재건할 수 있다고 믿는다.
그러나 그 성공의 기준은 숫자나 규모가 아니라,
얼마나 품위 있게 과거를 품고 미래로 나아가느냐에 달려 있다.
어쩌면 이 이야기는 한 지역 클럽의 문제가 아니라,
우리 모두의 미래에 대한 이야기일지도 모른다.
언젠가 우리 역시 누군가에게 ‘이전 세대’가 될 것이기 때문이다.
그때 우리는 어떤 모습으로 남아 있을 것인가.
세인트 폴스 베이의 조용한 저녁, 그 질문이 오래도록 마음에 남는다.
In the quiet coastal town of St. Paul’s Bay in Malta,
there stands a Lions Club that once served its community with quiet dedication.
Today, however, it finds itself at a crossroads.
The club has only six members left, all around their eighties.
They are individuals who have upheld the spirit of service for decades.
Some drive over an hour simply because parking is free at the meeting location.
Their commitment is admirable—yet at the same time,
it carries a certain loneliness.
The annual fee is just 40 euros,
yet even that feels burdensome in the current reality.
The club has no funds, no fixed meeting place, and little structure to sustain itself.
As both a Rotarian and a Lions member,
I traveled from Buġibba to St. Paul’s Bay to take part in the transition of leadership.
In doing so, I found myself confronting an unexpected question:
“Will I one day sit where they are now?”
It was not a passing thought, but a profound reflection on time,
life, and the meaning of community.
Realistically, this club needs rebuilding.
It requires new leadership, a structured system, and above all,
an infusion of younger members.
I will likely take on the role of president,
with key positions filled by individuals I have recommended.
In many ways, the direction is already set.
The question is no longer whether it can be done—but how.
Yet the greatest challenge lies elsewhere.
It is in how we regard the elderly members who have sustained this club for so long.
They are not a “problem” to be solved;
They are the very history of the club. Before we speak of efficiency and innovation,
We must first acknowledge their years of dedication.
Their methods may belong to another era, but their sincerity toward service remains timeless.
Reviving the St. Paul’s Bay Lions Club is not merely an organizational task.
It is about restoring a connection between generations
and redefining what service means today.
It is not about discarding the old, but about carrying it forward in a renewed form.
I believe this club can be rebuilt successfully.
But success should not be measured in numbers or scale
—it should be measured by how gracefully we honor the past while moving toward the future.
Perhaps this story is not just about a small club in Malta,
but about all of us. One day, we too will become “the previous generation.
” And when that time comes, what kind of presence will we leave behind?
On a quiet evening in St. Paul’s Bay, that question lingers.
現在の会員はわずか6名。いずれも80歳前後で、
長年にわたり奉仕の精神を守り続けてきた方々である。
無料駐車場があるという理由で、1時間以上かけて車で集まるその姿は、
尊敬に値すると同時に、どこか切なさも感じさせる。
年会費は40ユーロとわずかだが、
それさえも負担となる現実。資金はほぼゼロで、定期的に集まる場所すら確保されていない。
私自身、ロータリアンでありライオンズの会員でもあるが、
今回、引き継ぎのためにブジッバからセント・ポールズ・ベイを訪れた。
そしてふと、ある問いに直面した。「自分もいつか、あの席に座るのだろうか」と。
それは単なる想像ではなく、時間と人生、そして共同体の意味を見つめ直す深い問いだった。
現実的に、このクラブには再建が必要である。
新しいリーダーシップ、体系的な運営、
そして何より若い世代の参加が不可欠だ。
おそらく私が会長を引き受け、幹事や会計も私の推薦した人材で構成されることになるだろう。
方向性はすでに見えている。問題は「できるかどうか」ではなく、「どう実現するか」だ。
しかし、最も難しいのは別のところにある。
それは、このクラブを支えてきた高齢の会員たちへの向き合い方である。
彼らは「解決すべき問題」ではなく、このクラブの歴史そのものだ。
効率や革新を語る前に、まず彼らの積み重ねてきた時間を尊重しなければならない。
方法は時代遅れかもしれないが、奉仕への誠実さは今も変わらない。
セント・ポールズ・ベイ・ライオンズクラブの再生は、
単なる組織改革ではない。
それは世代をつなぎ直し、現代における奉仕の意味を再定義する試みである。
古いものを捨てるのではなく、形を変えて受け継いでいく作業なのだ。
私はこのクラブを再建できると信じている。
しかしその成功は、規模や数字では測れない。
過去をどれだけ品位をもって受け止め、未来へつなげるかにかかっている。
この物語は、マルタの一つのクラブに限った話ではないのかもしれない。
やがて私たちも「前の世代」と呼ばれる日が来る。そのとき、どのような姿でありたいのか。
セント・ポールズ・ベイの静かな夕暮れの中で、その問いが心に残り続ける。
