이재명 대통령이 8일 이시바 시게루 전 일본 총리와 만나 "총리 재임 시기 한·일 관계가 안정적으로 관리됐고 이후 협력 흐름도 이어지고 있어 감사히 생각하며 복잡한 국제 환경 속에서 앞으로도 역할을 계속해 달라”고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 낮 청와대에서 이시바 전 총리와 오찬을 함께하며 한·일 관계 및 국제 정세 등에 대한 의견을 나누며 이같이 말했다.
이시바 전 총리는 “짧은 재임 기간이었으나 외교서 가장 중시한 과제는 한·일 관계 발전이었다”며 “양국 관계를 세계서 가장 우수한 수준으로 만들고 싶다는 생각은 지금도 변함 없다”고 말했다.
또 “양국은 정치뿐 아닌 민간 차원서도 긴밀한 교류를 이어갈 필요가 있다”고 덧붙였다.
두 사람은 지난해 G7(주요 7개국) 정상회의 계기로 만난 가운데 이번 회동은 지난해 9월 이후 약 6개여월 만이다.
