충주시는 8일 6.25 전쟁에 참전해 공을 세운 고(故) 김봉호 상병 유족에게 화랑무공훈장을 전수했다.
이날 훈장 전수식에서 김진석 충주시장 권한대행 부시장은 국방부장관을 대신해 유족인 자녀 김영원 씨에게 무공훈장 및 증서와 기념패를 전수하며 감사를 표했다.
고(故) 김봉호 상병은 9사단 30연대 소속으로 1952년 6월 입대해 전쟁 중 뚜렷한 무공을 세운 공로를 인정받아 이번 전수 대상자로 선정됐다.
훈장을 수여받은 김영원 씨는 “오랜 시간이 흘렀음에도 아버님의 헌신을 잊지 않고 찾아준 국가와 시 관계자분들께 깊은 감사를 드린다”고 소감을 전했다.
김진석 부시장은 “70여 년이라는 시간이 흘렀지만 지금이라도 무공훈장을 전달해 나라를 위해 헌신한 노고에 감사를 표할 수 있어서 기쁠 따름”이라며 “국가를 위해 희생하신 국가유공자와 그 유가족분들이 마땅한 예우받고 자긍심을 가지며 사실 수 있도록 복지 증진에 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 국방부와 육군본부는 6․25전쟁 당시 무공훈장 수여가 결정됐으나, 훈장을 받지 못한 무공수훈자 또는 유가족을 위해 지난 2019년부터 「6․25전쟁 무공훈장 주인공 찾기 캠페인」을 추진하고 있다.
