[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 신현송 한국은행 총재 후보자의 가족이 모두 외국 국적인 것으로 확인됐다. 특히 장녀는 영국 국적을 취득한 뒤 27년 동안 대한민국 국적 상실 신고를 하지 않은 사실이 새로 드러났다.
박수영 국민의힘 의원은 8일 자신의 사회관계망서비스(SNS)를 통해 “신현송 한국은행 총재 후보자의 장녀가 1999년 영국 국적을 취득하고도 대한민국 국적 상실 신고를 하지 않았다”고 밝혔다. 박 의원은 한국은행이 제출한 자료를 근거로 들며 “신 후보자의 장녀는 1991년 우리나라에서 태어났지만, 이후 영국으로 이주해 1999년 영국 국적을 얻으면서 한국 국적을 자동으로 잃었다”고 설명했다.
국적법 제16조에 따르면 한국 국적을 상실한 자는 법무부 장관에게 신고해야 하고, 공무원은 이를 발견하면 지체 없이 통보해야 한다. 그러나 신 후보자는 27년 동안 관련 신고를 하지 않았다.
신 후보자는 “장기간 해외 생활로 행정 처리가 완결되지 않았다”고 해명했지만, 박 의원은 “신 후보자가 2010년 청와대 국제경제보좌관으로 근무하며 국내에 머문 기간에도 신고가 가능했다”고 지적했다.
박 의원은 또 “신 후보자의 아내는 미국 국적, 장남은 영국 국적이며 장남은 병역의무도 이행하지 않았다”며 “신 후보자 부부와 자녀 명의로 신고된 재산 약 82억 원 가운데 45억 원이 해외 금융자산과 부동산으로 확인된다”고 밝혔다.
그는 “한국은행 총재 후보자의 가족이 모두 외국 국적을 가지고 있고, 상당한 해외 자산을 보유한 점을 국민이 어떻게 받아들일지 신 후보자는 무겁게 생각해야 한다”며 “오는 15일 인사청문회에서 엄정히 검증할 것”이라고 말했다.

All members of Bank of Korea governor-nominee Shin Hyun-song’s family hold foreign nationalities. It has newly come to light that his elder daughter, who became a British citizen in 1999, has not reported the loss of her Korean nationality for 27 years.
Rep. Park Soo-young of the People Power Party revealed on April 8 through his social media post that “Shin Hyun-song’s elder daughter acquired British citizenship in 1999 but failed to report the loss of her Korean nationality.” Citing official data submitted by the Bank of Korea, Rep. Park explained that “Shin’s daughter was born in Korea in 1991, later moved to the United Kingdom, and automatically lost her Korean citizenship upon acquiring British nationality.”
Under Article 16 of Korea’s Nationality Act, anyone who loses Korean citizenship must report the loss to the Minister of Justice, and civil servants who learn of such cases are obliged to notify the ministry “without delay.” However, Shin reportedly did not file such a report for 27 years.
Shin explained that “long-term overseas residence prevented the administrative process from being completed,” but Rep. Park pointed out that “Shin served as a senior presidential adviser for international economics at the Blue House in 2010, when he could have made the filing.”
Rep. Park further noted that “Shin’s wife is an American citizen and his son holds British nationality, with the son not having fulfilled mandatory military service.” According to the data, of the family’s declared assets totaling 8.2 billion won (approximately USD 6 million), more than half—about 4.5 billion won—is concentrated in overseas financial holdings and real estate.
Park stressed, “Given that all family members of the central bank governor-nominee possess foreign nationalities and significant overseas assets, Shin must take seriously how the public will perceive this,” adding that the confirmation hearing set for April 15 “will rigorously examine these matters.”
