[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 동서대학교는 지난 8일 라오스국립대학교와 학술교류 협약(MoA) 및 아시아연합대학(AAU) 참여를 위한 업무협약(MoU)을 체결했다고 13일 밝혔다.
이번 협약으로 라오스국립대학교는 라오스 대학 중 최초로 AAU 회원교가 되었으며, 양 대학은 학생 교류와 공동 연구 등 다각적인 교육 협력을 추진하기로 했다.
이번 협약은 동서대학교가 추진하는 AAU ‘국가 다변화 전략’의 핵심 성과로 꼽힌다. 라오스국립대학교의 합류에 따라 AAU 네트워크는 기존 14개국 162개 대학에서 15개국 163개 대학으로 확대되었으며, 아시아 전역을 아우르는 교육 협력 기반이 더욱 공고해졌다.
1996년 설립된 라오스국립대학교는 수도 비엔티안에 위치한 현지 최고 수준의 국립 종합대학으로서 향후 AAU 내 교육 및 연구 거점 역할을 수행할 예정이다.
양교가 체결한 학술교류 협약에는 학생 및 교수진의 상호 교류, 학점 상호 인정 및 복수학위 프로그램 운영, 공동 연구 및 학술 세미나 개최, 단기 연수 프로그램 개발 등 실질적인 협력 방안이 담겼다.
특히 동서대가 주도하는 AAU는 교육부 ‘글로컬대학30’ 사업의 일환인 ‘아시아 대학 연합 개방형 플랫폼 구축’ 프로젝트의 핵심으로, 2025년 2월 시범 운영을 거쳐 2026년 9월 공식 출범을 앞두고 있다.
장제국 동서대 총장은 라오스국립대학교와의 협력이 AAU가 아시아 고등교육 혁신 모델로 자리매김하는 중요한 전환점이 될 것이라고 평가하며, 지속 가능한 교육 협력 생태계를 구축하겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.
이에 푸펫 키오필라봉 라오스국립대 부총장은 AAU 프로젝트 참여를 뜻깊게 생각하며, 향후 라오스 내에서도 AAU 관련 협력을 적극적으로 확대해 나가겠다고 화답했다.

Dongseo University announced on the 13th that it signed a Memorandum of Agreement for academic exchange and a Memorandum of Understanding for participation in the Asia Alliance University (AAU) with the National University of Laos on the 8th. The ceremony was attended by Dongseo University President Jekuk Chang, National University of Laos Vice President Dr. Phouphet Kyophilavong, and other key officials.
This agreement is a significant part of Dongseo University’s "National Diversification Strategy" for the AAU, marking the first foundation for higher education cooperation with Laos. Notably, the National University of Laos has become the first institution in the country to join the AAU as a member university.
With this new addition, the AAU network has expanded from 162 universities in 14 countries to 163 universities in 15 countries, further strengthening the educational cooperation network across Asia. As a premier national comprehensive university covering various fields including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering, the National University of Laos is expected to serve as a core hub for education and research within the AAU platform.
The AAU, led by Dongseo University, is a central pillar of the "Asia University Alliance Open Platform Construction" project, which is being promoted as part of the Ministry of Education’s "Glocal University 30" initiative. Dongseo University has been consistently working to identify Asian partner institutions and expand its network, with an official launch scheduled for September 2026 following a three-week pilot operation in February 2025.
The academic exchange agreement between the two universities includes various cooperation measures, such as student and faculty exchanges, mutual credit recognition, double degree programs, joint research, academic seminars, and the development of short-term training programs.
President Jekuk Chang stated that the cooperation with the National University of Laos will be a major turning point for the AAU to establish itself as an innovative model for Asian higher education. He added that the university will continue to build a sustainable educational cooperation ecosystem based on mutual trust. Vice President Phouphet Kyophilavong expressed his appreciation for joining the AAU project and shared his commitment to actively expanding AAU participation and cooperation within Laos.
