[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 분쟁이 격화되며 가자지구가 ‘지상 최대의 감옥’이라 불리는 극한의 위기를 겪고 있는 가운데, 한국의 한 여성 단체가 15년째 묵묵히 이어온 구호 활동이 국제사회의 귀감이 되고 있다.
사단법인 세계평화여성연합(이하 여성연합)은 창립 34주년을 맞아 팔레스타인 최대 민간 의료기구인 팔레스타인의료구호협회(PMRS)로부터 감사 서한을 받았다고 밝혔다. PMRS는 서한에서 “외부 지원이 사실상 차단된 절망적인 상황에서 여성연합의 지속적인 연대는 가자지구 주민들이 인간의 존엄성을 유지하며 생존할 수 있게 하는 생명줄과 같다”고 전했다.
여성연합의 ‘가자아이드림(Gaza i Dream)’ 프로젝트는 단순한 자선 활동을 넘어 ‘공생·공영·공의’의 가치를 실천하기 위해 2011년 시작됐다. 이 프로젝트의 기원은 1997년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 당시 여성연합은 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 여성 지도자들을 한자리에 모으는 ‘중동여성평화회의(MEW)’를 개최하며 화해의 물꼬를 텄다. 이 회의는 종교와 정치를 초월한 민간 외교의 성과로 인정받아 유엔(UN)의 주목을 받기도 했다.

지난 15년간 여성연합의 지원은 진화해 왔다. 초기에는 결연 아동에 대한 1:1 의료비 지원에 집중했으나, 현재는 파괴된 의료 인프라를 복구하는 보건의료 시스템 후원으로 확대됐다. 특히 2023년 분쟁 발생 이후 금융 제재와 국경 봉쇄로 송금이 불가능해진 위기 상황에서도 현지 네트워크를 유지하며 끝내 지원을 재개한 점은 여성연합의 끈기 있는 평화 의지를 보여준다.
최근 전달된 1만 5,000유로는 의약품 공급뿐 아니라, 전쟁 트라우마를 겪는 아동들을 위한 심리치료와 임산부 전용 모성 보건 사업에 투입되어 약 150만 명의 PMRS 수혜 주민들에게 혜택이 돌아가고 있다.
김고은 여성연합 한국회장은 “가자지구의 비극은 힘의 논리가 지배하는 세상의 단면을 보여준다”며 “우리는 국경을 초월한 ‘어머니의 사랑’이라는 부드럽지만 강한 힘으로 전쟁의 상처를 치유하고, 아이들이 다시 꿈꿀 수 있는 세상을 만드는 사명을 멈추지 않을 것”이라고 강조했다.
UN 경제사회이사회(ECOSOC) 포괄적 협의지위를 보유한 NGO로서 여성연합은 오는 5월 추가 지원을 확정하며, 중동 평화를 위한 인도적 행보를 더욱 가속화할 방침이다.

In a region often described as a "living nightmare" due to escalating conflict and a crumbling medical infrastructure, a South Korean women’s organization has demonstrated extraordinary commitment by sustaining humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip for 15 consecutive years.
The Women’s Federation for World Peace Korea (WFWP Korea) announced the receipt of an official letter of gratitude from the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), the largest non-governmental health provider in Palestine. Marking WFWP’s 34th anniversary, the letter emphasized that the organization’s steadfast solidarity acts as a lifeline, allowing the people of Gaza to survive with dignity amidst near-total isolation from international support.
The ‘Gaza i Dream’ project, launched in 2011, stands as a testament to WFWP’s core philosophy of interdependence and shared values. Its roots lie in the historic ‘Women’s Conference for Peace in the Middle East (MEW)’ initiated in 1997. By bringing together female leaders from Israel and Palestine—adversaries divided by decades of political and religious strife—WFWP established a unique track of grassroots diplomacy that has drawn praise from the United Nations.
Over the past decade and a half, the scope of aid has expanded from individual child medical sponsorships to systemic healthcare support. Despite the severe challenges following the October 2023 conflict—where financial sanctions and border closures halted remittances for nearly two years—WFWP successfully resumed its mission in 2025. The latest contribution of 15,000 Euros has been instrumental in funding mobile clinics for war trauma, maternal healthcare, and the provision of essential medicines, benefiting thousands of civilians across the Gaza Strip.
“The tragedy in Gaza reflects a world dominated by the logic of power,” said Go-eun Kim, President of WFWP Korea. “Our mission is to heal these scars through the ‘logic of love’—the soft yet resilient power of a mother’s heart that transcends borders. We remain committed to ensuring that the children of Gaza can dream of a tomorrow free from fear.”
As an NGO with General Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), WFWP Korea plans to dispatch a new round of aid this May, further solidifying its role as a key player in international peacebuilding and humanitarian relief.
