이번 상반기 장학생 선발은 총 12개 유형으로 나눠 진행된다. 신청 자격은 공고일인 4월 13일 기준 구미시에 1년 이상 주소를 둔 관내 고등학생과 관내 고등학교를 졸업한 대학생 등이며, 학업 성적과 생활 정도 등을 종합적으로 고려해 선발할 예정이다.
고등학생은 성적우수·다자녀·기회균등·특기 분야로, 대학생은 진학우수·성적우수·지역대학육성·다자녀·기회균등·예체능특기·방송통신대 구미시학습관 유형으로 신청할 수 있다. 이 밖에 국가유공자 후손 유형도 포함된다.
올해는 더 많은 학생에게 혜택이 돌아갈 수 있도록 선발 기준도 개선됐다. 기회균등 및 국가유공자 후손 유형의 성적 기준을 완화해 지원 문턱을 낮췄으며, 지역 내 예체능 계열 고등학교가 없는 점을 반영해 고교 특기 및 대학 예체능 특기 분야는 관외 고등학교 재학생과 졸업생까지 지원 대상을 확대했다.
또 대학생 다자녀(3자녀 이상) 유형 선발 인원도 지난해보다 10명 늘어난 60명으로 확대하는 등 장학 지원 폭을 넓혔다.
특히 하반기 선발 예정인 ‘지역대학-지역 내 취·창업 연계 장학생’ 유형을 포함한 올해 전체 장학사업 규모는 총 467명, 6억400만 원으로 집계됐다. 이는 지난해 413명, 5억1,300만 원보다 인원은 54명, 지급액은 9,100만 원 증가한 역대 최대 규모다.
