이번 총회는 ‘회복력 있는 미래를 향한 여정(Navigating Towards a Resilient Future)’을 주제로 오는 5월 11일부터 13일까지 사흘간 포항과 경주에서 열린다. 세계 30여 개국 관광 분야 정부 관계자와 전문가 등 300여 명이 참석해 글로벌 관광산업의 핵심 의제를 논의할 예정이다.
행사 첫날에는 개회식과 경영이사회, 산업 및 교육 라운드테이블 회의, 청년 심포지엄이 진행된다. 둘째 날에는 연차총회와 글로벌 컨퍼런스를 중심으로 지부회의, 정책포럼, 갈라디너가 이어지며, 마지막 날에는 컨퍼런스와 폐막식으로 일정을 마무리한다.
이번 총회는 지난해 경북도와 경북도의회, 경북문화관광공사, 포항시, 경주시로 구성된 유치사절단이 경쟁 끝에 유치에 성공한 국제행사다. 특히 1979년 경주 보문관광단지 개장과 육부촌(현 경북문화관광공사 사옥) 준공을 기념해 열린 PATA 워크숍 이후 47년 만에 경북에서 다시 열리는 대규모 관광 총회라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 올해가 PATA 창립 75주년이라는 점도 상징성을 더하고 있다.
경북도와 경북문화관광공사는 지난해 APEC 정상회의 성공 개최 분위기를 이번 총회로 이어간다는 전략이다. APEC 정상들이 방문했던 명소를 연계한 ‘APEC 정상 발자취 특별 투어’를 개발하고, 행사 기간 경북형 MICE 관광 상품도 선보일 계획이다.
또한 한글·한식·한복·한옥·한지 등 ‘5韓’ 테마의 경북 홍보관을 운영해 참가자들이 전통과 현대가 공존하는 경북의 매력을 직접 체험할 수 있도록 할 예정이다.
운영 방식도 주목된다. 역사·문화 관광도시 경주와 첨단 산업·해양 관광도시 포항의 강점을 결합한 PATA 역사상 최초의 ‘듀얼 시티(Dual-City)’ 모델이 도입된다. 라한호텔 포항과 화백컨벤션센터(HICO), 육부촌, 경주엑스포대공원 등을 연계한 체류형 행사 운영으로 약 100억 원 규모의 직·간접 경제효과가 기대된다.
김남일 경북문화관광공사 사장은 “1979년 육부촌이 대한민국 관광의 출발점을 마련했다면, 2026년 PATA 연차총회는 APEC 성공 기운을 이어받아 경북이 글로벌 MICE 허브로 도약하는 전환점이 될 것”이라며 “역사와 미래가 공존하는 성공적인 총회를 선보이겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편 이번 총회는 2027년 개관 예정인 포항국제전시컨벤션센터(POEX)와 2028년 개항 예정인 울릉공항을 앞두고 경북이 글로벌 MICE 관광 허브로서 경쟁력을 세계에 알리는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

Under the theme of ‘Navigating Towards a Resilient Future,’ this year’s summit will be held in Pohang and Gyeongju for three days, from May 11 to 13. Approximately 300 participants, including government officials and experts from the tourism sector in over 30 countries, are expected to attend to discuss key agendas for the global tourism industry.
On the first day of the event, the opening ceremony, the Board of Directors meeting, industry and education roundtables, and a youth symposium will take place. On the second day, the schedule centers around the Annual General Meeting and Global Conference, followed by branch meetings, a policy forum, and a gala dinner. The final day concludes the event with a conference and a closing ceremony.
This General Meeting is an international event that was successfully secured last year after a competitive bidding process by a delegation composed of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council, the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation, Pohang City, and Gyeongju City. It holds particular significance as it marks the first large-scale tourism general meeting to be held in Gyeongsangbuk-do in 47 years, since the PATA workshop held in 1979 to commemorate the opening of the Gyeongju Bomun Tourist Complex and the completion of Yukbuchon (the current Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation building). The fact that this year marks the 75th anniversary of PATA's founding adds further symbolic importance.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation plan to carry the momentum from the successful hosting of last year's APEC Summit into this General Meeting. They intend to develop a "Special Tour Tracing the Footsteps of APEC Leaders" linking famous landmarks visited by the leaders, and also plan to showcase Gyeongbuk-style MICE tourism products during the event. In addition, a Gyeongbuk promotional pavilion featuring the "5 Han" themes—Hangul, Hansik, Hanbok, Hanok, and Hanji—will be operated to allow participants to directly experience the charms of Gyeongbuk, where tradition and modernity coexist.
The operational method is also drawing attention. Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation, stated, "If Yukbuchon laid the starting point for tourism in Korea in 1979, the 2026 PATA Annual General Meeting will serve as a turning point for Gyeongbuk to leap forward as a global MICE hub, inheriting the momentum of APEC's success." He added, "We will present a successful General Meeting where history and the future coexist."
Meanwhile, this general assembly is expected to serve as an opportunity for Gyeongbuk to showcase its competitiveness as a global MICE tourism hub to the world ahead of the Pohang International Exhibition & Convention Center (POEX), scheduled to open in 2027, and Ulleung Airport, scheduled to open in 2028.
