오늘날 우리의 정치 현실은 어떠한가. 갈등과 분열은 극에 달해 있고, 대화와 타협이라는 정치의 본령은 사라진 지 오래다. 상대를 무너뜨려야 할 적으로 규정하는 극단적 진영 논리 속에서 국익은 설 자리를 잃어가고 있다. 나는 오늘 현판식 내내 두 선배님이 보여주셨던 ‘헌신’과 ‘신의’를 떠올렸다. 그분들은 치열하게 싸우면서도 국가의 명운이 걸린 일에는 기꺼이 손을 잡을 줄 아는 거물들이셨다.
지금 우리에게 절실한 것은 바로 그 ‘대화와 타협의 정치’다. 국익을 위해서라면 자신의 기득권을 내려놓고 타협할 줄 아는 용기, 그리고 한 번 맺은 인연을 끝까지 책임지는 신의의 리더십이 필요하다. 분열을 종식하고 더 좋은 대한민국을 만들기 위해서는 정치권이 먼저 두 거목의 발자취를 따라가야 한다.

Throughout today's plaque unveiling ceremony, I recalled the "dedication" and "faith" that these two seniors demonstrated. They were giants who, despite fighting fiercely, knew how to willingly join hands when the fate of the nation hung in the balance.
What we desperately need right now is precisely that ‘politics of dialogue and compromise.’ We need the courage to set aside one’s vested interests and compromise for the sake of national interest, as well as leadership of fidelity that takes full responsibility for relationships once formed. To end division and build a better Republic of Korea, the political sphere must first follow in the footsteps of these two giants.
