1992년-1993년, 토요신문-일요서울 편집국장 시절이었다. 컴퓨터가 없던 시절이라, 신문제작을 위해 거의 날마다 밤늦은 시간까지 야근이었다. 이때 필자에게 행운이 날라들었다. 기자로서 만나기 어려운 재계 인물과 인터뷰할 기회가 만들어졌다.
이병철 삼성그룹 창업자의 큰아들 이맹희(1931년 6월 20일 - 2015년 8월 14일)씨였다. 그는 '비운의 황태자'로 불리었다. 큰 아들(장자)이었지만, 삼성그룹 후계자가 되지 못했다. 그러나 그는 1993 제일비료 회장, 1968 제일제당 대표이사 부사장, 1968 삼성전자 부사장, 1968 삼성물산 부사장을 지냈다.
야행성(밤에 일하고 낮에 잠자는)인 이맹희씨가 밤 12시가 넘어 필자에게 전화를 걸어왔다. (그는 고 이건희 삼성그룹 회장의 친형이었다). 부산 해운대 자택으로 내려오면, 인터뷰를 해주겠다는 것이었다. 행운이었다. 삼성가의 내면을 생생하게 들을 수 있었기 때문이었다. 몇 번의 단독 인터뷰가 진행됐었다. 그때, 혹여 메모를 못하게 할까봐, 또는 기록으로 남기기 위해 일본에서 구입해온 도청기를 몸 안에 숨기고 만났다. 별도의 녹음기도 주머니 속에 넣었다.
"이 회장님, 녹음기 가져왔는데 녹음해도 됩니까?"
"하십시오.."
이맹희씨는 화통하게, 녹음을 허락했다. 이때, 필자의 몸 안에서는 도청기가 빙빙 가동되고 있었다. 한때, 필자는 몸 안에 도청장치를 달고 다녔다.
고 이맹희 회장에게 바치는 조사
필자의 지인(知人)인 손경찬 작가는 이맹희 회장 사망 직후 지난 2015년 8월17일 “하늘 무너지는 슬픔 같다”는 조시를 남겼습니다. 손경찬 작가는 이맹희 회장의 비서실장으로 일했었다. 손경찬 작가가 이때 쓴, 애도시의 전문은 아래와 같다.

마른하늘이 갑자기 흐려져서 비가 흩뿌리던 날 이 세상에서 가장 존경하는 거목, 한분을 여의었으니 슬픔이 비 오듯 합니다. 삼성 가(家) 맏이로 세상의 이목을 받으며 살아오신 팔십여 생애는 때로는 화려해 보였지만 수행자 같은 고행의 길이요 고난의 시간이기도 했습니다.
어느 때는 깜깜한 거실에서 새벽이 다 되도록 해운대의 밤바다를 바라보며 한 마디 말씀도 없이 불면의 시간을 보내었고, 또 어떤 때는 흰 갈기를 세우며 달려와서는 바윗돌에 부쳐 갈라지는 동해바다의 파도를 보시며 고뇌하시던 그 모습들도 다시는 볼 수가 없습니다.
전생에 저와는 무슨 인연이길래 함께한 십년 세월 동안 회장님께서 자주 일러주신 말씀은 “손군, 항상 최선을 다 하거라” 그 말 한 마디였습니다. 언젠가 어르신을 모시고 외국 땅, 아르헨티나에서 고생하던 5월 어느 날, 그 때는 기분이 내키셨는지 인생 교훈을 들려주셨는데 쓴맛 듬뿍 배인 말씀이었습니다. “세상일은 매정하고 때로는 각박한 것이니 설령 이웃이라 하더라도 매사에 경계를 늦추지 말고 열심히 살아가야 한다”며 거듭 강조해주었습니다.
이맹희 회장님께서는 멀리 외국에 나와서 주야불철 당신을 위해 심부름하는 제가 힘들어 할까 위로한 이야기 같지만 의미심장한 화두였습니다. 그때는 깨달지 못했지만 세월이 흐른 이제 사 새겨보니 세상사가 만만치가 않고 호락호락하지 않다는 것을 에둘러 말씀하신 그 얘기는 세상 살아가는 지혜였습니다. 하지만 지금은 님을 여의고 하늘이 무너지는 슬픔 속에서 살아생전, 회장님의 넉넉함과 꿋꿋한 소신과 신의를 기리며 인생 그릇이 큰 별이셨음을 추모하는 애통의 시간입니다. 하오니 회장님이시여! 이생에서 겪은 갖은 일들을 하늘 멀리 날려 보내시고 편안한 혼령 되셔서 극락왕생(極樂往生)하십시오. 삼가 고인의 명복을 빕니다. 2015. 8. 17. 님의 영전 앞에서 손경찬이 애도의 시를 바칩니다. <손경찬 작가>.”
손경찬 작가는 고 이맹희씨를 회고하며 “세상의 일은 매정하고 때로는 각박한 것이니 설령 이웃이라 하더라도 매사에 경계를 늦추지 말고 열심히 살아가야 한다며 거듭 강조해주었다.”고 회고했다.
CJ그룹 창업과 성공기틀이 확실하게 다져진 것은 고 이맹희씨 작품
고 이맹희씨는 과연 세상에 떠도는 말처럼, 삼성그룹의 후계자가 되지 못한 비운의 황태자 였을까? 필자의 견해로는 '아니다'라는 결론이다. 고 이맹희씨는 일본에서 농대를 졸업, 오늘날 CJ그룹 식품산업을 그 당시에 기획하고 있었다. 오늘날 CJ그룹의 창업과 성공기틀이 확실하게 다져진 것은 고 이맹희씨 작품이었다. 그는 '비운의 황태자가 아닌, 거대 기업의 창업자였다. CJ그룹은 이병철-이맹희-이재현으로 이어지고 있는 셈이다. 이맹희'씨는 시대를 앞서 간 선각적인 큰 인물-큰 기업인이었다. 이맹희, 삼성가의 장남이 집에서 직접 구워줬던 양고기 맛이 그립다. moonilsuk@naver.com

From 1992 to 1993, he was the editor-in-chief of Saturday Shinmun-Sun Seoul. Without computers, he worked overtime until late at night almost every day to make newspapers. At this time, luck fell to me. An opportunity was created to interview business people who are difficult to meet as a reporter.
It was Lee Maeng-hee (June 20, 1931-August 14, 2015), the eldest son of Samsung Group founder Lee Byung-cheol. He was called'the prince of luck'. He was the eldest son (firstborn), but he did not become the successor to the Samsung group. However, he served as Chairman of Cheil Fertilizer in 1993, CEO of CheilJedang in 1968, Vice President of Samsung Electronics in 1968, and Vice President of Samsung C&T in 1968.
Lee Maeng-hee, who is nocturnal (working at night and sleeping during the day), called me after 12 p.m. (He was the brother of the late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee). When he came down to his house in Haeundae, Busan, he said he would do an interview. I was lucky. It was because I could hear the inside of the Samsung family vividly. Several solo interviews were conducted. At that time, in case he would not be able to take notes, or to keep a record, he hid a wiretap that he had purchased from Japan and met him. I also put a separate recorder in my pocket.

Ms. Lee Maeng-hee was angry and allowed the recording. At this time, the tapping device was running around inside my body. At one time, I wore a wiretap inside his body.
Investigation dedicated to late Chairman Lee Maeng-hee
On August 17, 2015, immediately after the death of Chairman Lee Maeng-hee, author Son Gyeong-chan, an acquaintance of the author, left a joke saying, “It is like the sorrow of the sky falling”. Writer Son Gyeong-chan used to serve as the secretary of Chairman Lee Maeng-hee. The full text of mourning, written by Sohn Gyeong-chan at this time, is as follows.

On the day when the dry sky suddenly became cloudy and rain was scattered, sadness seems to be raining because I was one of the most respected giants in the world. As the eldest son of the Samsung family, his eighty or so years of life receiving the attention of the world sometimes looked splendid, but it was also a path of torture and a time of suffering like a monk.
At one time, in a dark living room, watching the night sea of Haeundae until dawn, and without saying a word, he spent a sleepless time, and at other times, he ran away with a white mane and agonized to see the waves of the East Sea split by rocks. You will never see them again.
In my previous life, because of what kind of relationship I had with me, the President's frequent words during the ten years I had been with were, “Son, always do your best.” One day in May, when he was having a hard time in a foreign land, Argentina, with an elderly man, he told him his life lesson to see if he was feeling reluctant at that time, and it was a word full of bitterness. “The world's work is hard and sometimes harsh, so even if you are a neighbor, you have to stay vigilant in everything and live hard,” he emphasized again and again.
Chairman Lee Maeng-hee was a consoling story about whether I would be having a hard time running errands for you all day and night after coming to a foreign country, but it was a meaningful topic. At that time, I didn't realize it, but now that the years have passed, I have been thinking about it, and it was the wisdom of living in the world. However, now is a time of sorrow to commemorate that the vessel of life was a great star, in honor of the President's generosity, strong conviction, and sincerity while living amidst the sorrow of the sky falling. President Haoni! Blow away all the things you have experienced in this life, become a comfortable spirit, and regenerate in paradise (極樂往生). May the souls of the deceased refrain. 2015. 8. 17. Recalling the late Lee Maeng-hee, writer Son Gyeong-chan repeatedly emphasized that "the world's work is cruel and sometimes harsh, so even if you are a neighbor, you have to live hard without delaying your vigilance in everything."
Was the late Lee Maeng-hee the prince of misfortune who could not become the successor of the Samsung Group, like the words in the world? In my opinion, it is a conclusion that'no'. The late Lee Maeng-hee graduated from Agricultural University in Japan and was planning the CJ Group food industry at that time. Today, it was the late Lee Maeng-hee's work that firmly laid the foundation for the start-up and success of CJ Group. He said,'I wasn't the prince of luck, but the founder of a giant company. CJ Group is leading by Lee Byung-cheol, Lee Maeng-hee and Lee Jae-hyun. 'Lee Maeng-hee' was a sensational big figure-big entrepreneur who went ahead of the times. I miss the taste of mutton that Lee Meng-hee and the eldest son of the Samsung family cooked at home.
