이에 대해 원희룡 후보는 “전두환 전 대통령은 쿠데타와 광주 학살 뿐만 아니라 삼청교육대, 기업인들에 대한 재산 탈취, 언론 탄압, 통제 등으로 민주주이 전반에 있어 군사독재가 어떤 것인가 뼈저리게 느끼게 한 대통령이었다”고 말했다.
그러면서 “(윤 후보의 발언은) 큰 실언이고 역사의식과 인식의 천박함을 드러낸 망언이라고 생각한다.”며 “우리 당에서 가장 큰 지지를 받는 유력주자인데 국민들에게 처절한 마음으로 사죄하고 잘못된 역사인식을 교정받는 참회의 시간을 가지시길 바란다”고 강조했다.
