살아남으려면, 이 세상에서 하나뿐인 그 무엇? 그 무엇을 찾아내야 한다. 제주도 감귤만 그려온 '감귤 화가'인 김순협 화가를 만났다.
지난 4월20일 저녁시간, 건축가 최부득 박사와 서울시 종로구 인사동에서 만나기로 했다. 최 박사가 갤러리 토포하우스(쌈지 앞길)로 안내했다. 김순협 화가(1961년 여수 생)의 감귤을 소재로 한 전시회(4월20일부터 5월2일)가 열리고 있었다. 김 화가의 작품을 보는 순간 “아름답다”는 말이 저절로 나왔다. 그 어디에서도 볼 수 없는 감귤 그림이었다. 그림 외부에 아지랑이 같은 비물질, 표현 하자면 모든 인간이 추구하는 행복 같은 게 떠다니고 있었다.

화가는 전시회의 도록에서 “사물과 사실들을 고정된 것이 아니라 입방체 도형처럼 위, 아래에서 또한 사방에서 관찰할 수 있다. 게다가 안과 밖이 같기도 하고, 다르기도 하다. 따라서 절대적인 선과 절대적인 악도 없어 보인다. 다만 이것들이 연결된 주변상황에 따라 또는 보는 이의 시점에 따라 다르게 변화되어 보인다”면서 "앞으로 살아갈 날이 살아 온 날보다 짧은 시점에서 더 밝고 맑고 아름답고 행복하고 고요한 곳에 시선을 고정한다”고 썼다. 그의 그림들이 아름답고 맑은 이유의 하나이다.
